Happy Birthday! My newest additions

Woodsville, NH

Three were born yesterday and nine last night. I was amazed I got any, I took the top off to refill the water and palced the top on its side and replaced it, thursday morning I discovered one of the plexiglass windows had fallen out and it was only 92 and no humidity. I misted them and misted them and was really hoping some would hatch. So far 12 out of 16 have!! They are moving around a lil too fast to get a good pic.

Oh how cute!
What kind are they?

Shoot forgot that, they are guineas. So far I think I have two royal purples, a voilet, a couple pearls (reg) and the rest I cannot figure out yet, they are really light colors and I have to wait to compare them to the keet color chart pics I found online

Woodsville, NH

According to the chart its hard to tell among the lighter ones under two to three months old. One pearl may need to be culled, he was stuck in the shell and I got him out, but his toes aren't straightening out. I will let him have about 24 hours. I left him in the incubator with the other two youngest (still slightly wet) I am going to be a some food and a low bowl of water. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Here's the color chart I found:

Are these your first Guineas or have you been keeping them all along? Did you purchase the eggs? I would love to have Guineas for helping me keep my garden bug free, but everyone I know says they are too loud. Are they really THAT loud?

I have a couple of older ones, those are still young though. I bought the eggs on ebay. They were assorted colors. I got them for ticks. As for being loud I will find that out in about a month or so. Personally I would rather have a loud bird than ticks covering my dogs and me (I get them all the time!!!) I will let you know!!

OMG. I don't have ticks, but we have fire ants here (which are as bad - and they hurt more, but they don't suck blood thank goodness).

Ebay huh.... wow, never thought of looking there. I'll have to check it out.

I am planning to add poultry next spring. I have all winter to create a home for them. I'd like to have guineas and chickens. I'm doing research right now and preparing.

Ebay had an assortment of colors, there is also eggbid.com You just need to keep checking and you can find what you need in eggs or even keet, chicks and older ones on Eggbid.com

I bought almost all of my eggs on ebay. Several auctions on eggbid and a couple privately thru a poultry forum. But I have only bought chicken and duck eggs.

love the keet pic !!!!!!!! Wow you really decided to get into the guineas didn't you...lol. I only have the two and only one of them is vocal on a regular basis. I believe it is a female, she seems to "call" in a description I read earlier. When they get scared the pair can raise a racket. The kids don't like the sound they make, claim its very irritating, doesn't bother me though.

Wish I could teach all the poultry to just range the garden and pick off the bugs but leave the plants alone...lol, I don't want much do I ??

I told myself if the keets do well I will try to hatch some eggs next season and would like to get a light colored variety for variation.

lora, sometimes people will take a curled foot and used packing tape to create a flat "boot" that tapes the foot into position, but still allows the chick to walk. Also, I have a crippled leg hen who actually does fine, so I'd wait and see. How is the little one doing?

Woodsville, NH

The keet is getting stronger. I think tomorrow I am going to make a boot, I read that you can make one with a pipe cleaner "W" white medical tape and cardboard. He can almost stand! He was stuck, the shell was on his butt and his lil legs weren't quite out all the way. He gets around pretty good. (I feel so guilty for not getting up early to check on him) I am just afraid if I leave him with the other babies they will trample him, I will watch and put one or two calmer ones with him.
Thanks for asking, I will keep you posted.

Well Scooter didn't make it. He had been flopping around most of the day yesterday unable to stand, and today he wasn't any better so I made the decision to send him to that great coop in the sky. Everyone else is doing fine, one small light colored has a couple of crooked toes, he'll have his boot on starting tomorrow.
