The Big Boys Visit

Marlton, NJ

Very overcast today.
Here's 2 Turkey Vultures that visited my yard this morning. They were eating what appeared to be a dead squirrel.
Their size is so impressive even if they are not a handsome lot.

Yes pelletory Turkey Vultures are very cool looking! I would always see them on the side of the road on my way to work in the early am. They stand quite tall. :)

Melbourne, FL

Unusual to see them land in a backyard....great photo opportunity though!

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Had them in this spring, doing the same thing. (dead squirrel) They sure are ugly, but clean up alot of undesirable stuff. I see them almost every day in the woods, circling....just in case I fall over I guess.

They didn't clean up to well this time theres lots of gross pieces all over the place.

BTW, I saw a Downy Woodpecker go into that birdhouse in the last pic. Watched for 20 minutes and he didn't come out! I wonder...
That house is not made for wp's the meaurements were more for BB's.
I'll have to keep my eyes peeled.

Pelletory,
I have had a Downy sleep in a nest box sized for a chickadee (she enlarged the entrance) every night in the winter, which I guess is not uncommon. It would make me laugh because she was sleepy in the morning, and took about 5 minutes to leave the box after first sticking her neck out. Maybe yours was checking it out for a cozy night spot!

Great pix! We don't get the Turkey buzzards here, just the smaller Black Vultures.

Lawrenceville, GA

Holy Moley! I'd flip out if I saw one of those ugly buggers in my backyard! Especially on my birdfeeder. And here I've been stressing over cowbirds!

Marlton, NJ

They are huge and I would have loved to have gotten a shot of them taking off just to show their large wingspan but it was way too dark out.

I've had them in my yard twice before eating a dead possum and some other dead thing. I was hoping the Red tail Hawks were going to drop in too like once before but they didn't show.

Their faces are ugly but their size is so impressive, they sound really cool when taking off.
