Hi all,
I have had to suspend my gardening activities for the last several years and am now starting all over. So, I have questions. I live in the eastern part of Tennessee (around Knoxville) and our first frost is usually right around halloween. I want to plant for a fall crop, but am not sure when to do it. I want to grow spinach, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, collards and lettuce. Anyone help me?
newbie wants a fall crop...
If you are going to start plants for transplant (broccoli, cabbage, collards) the time is now. If you plan to buy your plants from a local garden store, These will become available around the middle of August, a good planting time in East Tennessee. Direct seeded vegetables (spinach, carrots, turnips, mustard, kale etc) can be planted a round the middle of August. I am more familiar with the Tri-Cities area, but don't expect Knoxville to be radically different.
From Atlanta: How about snow or suger snap peas for Fall?
Thanks
Hi All: On the subject of greens, Turnips, Kale and Spinach, what should I do to prepare the soil now for planting in August? The area I have in mind is grassy and in full sun. Also, can I plant tomatoes now and have them mature before our first frost here? Seems kind of late but, I would love to have tomatoes as late as I can.

Thanks to all of the help from all of you my garden seems to be doing great. Thank you.
thanks farmerdill! Can the seedlings of cabbage and broccoli grow outside now or should I keep them under lights indoors?
I am starting mine outside in light shade. Usually works fine, they really don't like direct sun and July temps, so I use containers and start them in the coolest spot I can find.
Farmer,
My broccoli and cauliflower seedlings have sprouted and are "toughening" it out in full sun on the picnic table. They were fine that way before....only about 88-90° around here.
