is spegetti squash a summer squash or winter squash, can it be growin in the fall if it's a summer squash if I plant it around august. Which is around the time I plan on planting the winter squashes
fall veggie garden, who's planning now
Spaghetti squash is a winter squash, but has a shorter season than many. The latest I can plant winter squash and have them mature is July 1. They really slow down as the the daylenght decreases, and we get our first frost around Thanksgiving. I am preparing to start collards, broccoli and cauliflower. Turnips, mustard, carrots will go in late August with successive plantings til late September. Summer vegetables, beans and summer squash I can plant til late August.
YOu must show us some pictures of your veggie garden Wenny.
OUr first frost is usually the end of november too, so maybe I should start planting themiddle of july then.
I *tried* to grow some fall collards here last year but I think I really waited too late to seed them. I seeded them directly in the garden the middle of August. We got a couple of messes off them but they overwintered here and really took off this spring. I hated to pull them out but the area was where I wanted to put my tomatoes. (Oops, I think I should clarify... We ate a whole lot of greens before I finally pulled them out. lol)
Tomorrow is my date to plant the major part of my fall broccoli and cauliflower. I will plant a few more about 10 days later.
My spring broccoli has done very well. I planted 5 varieties. Four have made their central head and one is starting to head up now.
Lettuce and spinach planting are about 6 weeks away yet.
My fall tomatoes are about 3 inches tall and will be ready to transplant in 10-15 days.
I'll be replanting cucumbers and zucchini and putting out tomato transplants in the beginning of august. My Okra, Peppers, New Zealand & Malabar Spinach produce til frost so no need to replant them.
Fall/Winter planting begins at the beginning of October: Lettuces, Won Bok, Onions, Garlic, Peas, Beets, Daikon/Radishes, Carrots, and Cilantro/Parsley.
Fall veggies grow all winter here. I like gardening in the winter when the temperatures are cool and I'm not dripping sweat all over everything..... (ewwww) :-)
You don't have any bolting going on with the spinach? I had to till mine under cause of all the bolting going on, about to replant them, I planted bloomsdale longstanding and giant noble
New Zealand & Malabar "spinach" are warm weather greens. They really aren't true spinach. Heck - spinach where I live bolts in March! :-)
Your right, I didnt realize you said malabar, I hav emalabar spinach too, do you eat yours? LOL, I haven't eaten any of mine yet.
i've not heard of new zealand spinach.
This is the first year I've grown Malabar. It was very slow to get going, but now I'ts doing well. I eat it in salads - not my favorite, but it's okay. I prefer New Zealand spinach - grows like a weed and nothing seems to bother it.
thanks for the link
I have a whole bunch of small tomato plants, raised from suckers. They are now about 4" tall. DH put them in small containers last week and they look very good. When do you think I could plant them out? I have never planted tomatoes for the fall. And when I plant them should I give them anything special in their new home to help them out with autumn conditions? The tomatoes I have now growing are in a lasagna bed, started last fall, I think it is quite high in nitrogen.
I am in zone 7a, frost date mid-November.
Tomatoes transplanted [8 inches tall] at the end of June will start ripening in early September.
