Black bear at bird feeder

Southern Mountains, GA(Zone 6b)

For my friends on the vegetable forum, who might not see my posts in wildlife or the photo forum, I thought you might be interested in seeing what came to my feeder Saturday afternoon.

roseone33,

We used to have one come around all the time when we lived in NH, finally had to take down the bird feeder, he got to daring! He even came up onto the back deck one evening, scared the be-diddly out of my wife. ☺

Not many black bears in our section of KY though.

Good information. I am thinking of where I might put the bird feeder and the deck is the only answer. And having a bear on my deck is something I can't even contemplate. Don't know what I will do yet.

Omg!! The bear is soooo close. You have guts to just stand there and take this photo.

Thank you for sharing.

Great pictures.

You seem to have known that bears aren't all that dangerous if you are indoors and they are out. They aren't even all that dangerous if you are outdoors and they are otherwise occupied, like in eating. What is worrisome is if the bear decides to come in to see what you have in the refrigerator. They usually don't do that, but it has happened here in New Mexico.
Generally black bears aren't dangerous as long as you don't challenge them.

Too cool! I would most likely wet my pants, I'm afraid, but I'd love to see one up that close. You might consider putting something near your deck stairs that would make noise to scare it if it got too close -- just let it know what the boundaries are. They'll go wherever they can find food, from what I understand.

I am scared to death of bears! I didn't think that black bears were all that dangerous until I read my paper yesterday! Just last weekend here in Utah there was an 11 year old boy who got killed by a black bear. The bear tore into his families tent and drug him off. His mom was sleeping just a few feet away. SCARY!!! I guess this bear had also done this earlier (ripping into someone elses tent) before this accident happened. They found the bear and shot it.

I would be very careful where you put the bird feeder.

You really want to keep them fearful of humans.

Yes, I read that too. No sign of him since. I hope he's wandered off to greener pastures. I bring in the feeder every night at dusk and that has put the raccoons out of business as well.
I have no plans to get anywhere near any bear, you can count on that.

Roseone,

Did you get some rain this week? We got 3" all in one night on Tuesday which was almost too much. The water was washing over a lot of the county roads around here.

Same here. It was a deluge and was very welcome at my place. Not sure about any local flooding, haven't heard about any. The soil is till damp, a true miracle!
