This is a B4 and after. This is our front walk a year ago. When we moved in there was nothing along here except a giant holly and 3 nearly dead boxwoods. By July last year, I had one of the Boxwoods moved and had begun putting ins ome ferns and aspidistra. That's this first picture. I also built a little above ground fountain.
This bed faces north do is full shade except summer when it gets part sun.
Here's before;;;
Non-trop to trop in a year.
Here's "after" , how it looked this morning. Still have a ways to got, but I think it's an improvement.
There's a large fatsia that's camouflaged by overgrown chain ferns that I have to thin out. In another month all the EEs should be nice and big, and a 2nd fatsia that's pretty tiny should fill in. You can't really spot the fountain any more because the creeping fig I planted around it did its job. There's also 2 dwarf gardenia and a dwarf crape myrtle toward the front., some (obvious) sweet potato vine + setcraesea palida. Some callas that arent' blooming at the moment, astilbe that have bloomed already, and some cardinal flowers that are giant but not yet in bloom.

Hi Deb,
Huge difference, I really like it.
Alice
Thanks, Alice. I have some taller things that need to be further back, and some shorter than need to come forward. But I like it sooo much better. If it fills in as I hope, I'll post one more pic at that point.

Nicely done Deb--did you just move the large shrubs else where? I sure hope you had help! What are the 'spikey' things right next to the bri9ck? An iris, or?
I moved one of the Boxwoods elsewhere but the other was a goner. The Holly I cut way down. The roots were so huge that I left it and am keeping it trimmed down short. Yes, those are iris along the front, one of the "taller" things I need to move.

Great Job Deb!
Thanks for the nice words guys! I'm pretty pleased with how it's going so far. A few adjustments and this time next year I ought to be able to say, "It's done!". :)
Deb
No Way!!!! Gardens are never done, but you will have excellent "bones" for future follies.
(I was in your neighborhood yesterday and I kept looking for your window boxes. Poor DH, I kept yelling slow down I am looking for Deb's house).
Ardesia: We're a bit off the beaten path. But, I'm flattered that you looked! :D
Yeah, I know my little tropical bed will never be "done" but, it will be nearer to my vision. Still, so far....I am happy with its progress.

We were there for an old friend's birthday luncheon at the Woodlands and we arrived in Summerville a bit early so we spent 1/2 hour driving around our old haunts. Thankfully, the W. Carolina and Central Ave. areas have retained their charm.
Ah! Central Ave. So you actually could have seen our house. ;>
...and yes, Carolina is pretty much unchanged. The further you go out Central though, the more development there is. There is actually "traffic" on Central at 5PM. Strange but true.
