Can I force a flush?

Billerica, MA(Zone 6a)

Hi all,
I'm having a big party on June 30th and would LOVE for everyone to ooohhh and awww over my brugs. They are happy and in good shape but only a few teeny, tiny buds. Any suggestions for "encouraging" them along? I've got Messenger. Can I give them a shot?
Thanks in advance,
Lora B.

Hi Lora B.,
I am not happy to tell you this, but there is not much to do to force a flush. Brugmansia has an inbuild 'blueprint' that tell it how and when to bloom. I sometimes have the same problem. Since last year, we have opened our rose- and Brugmansia garden to the public. People are welcome to visit when they want too, but we do much to stress the fact that july-october is best, when they will experience the large trees in bloom.

Personally, I don' t use messenger or any agent of the same drawer. I have seen with some agents that either speed up growth or enforce blooming that they hurt the plants in the long run. It is like plants on coke. They grow fast and wild or they bloom and bloom, but only to be exhausted over time. I can only compare Brugmansia to people and say, that for both we have a certain amount of energy to our disposal. If we use it wisely and take time to restitute after work then we will maintain our energy throughout life. Like people, Brugmansia need good food, hard work and lot of care and restitution.

OH..Cow Manure... no.. that will first just make nice green leaves and strong limbs.. Messenger will help flowering...but not in a speeded up sence..but more as a result of a healthy plant..battleing foward to complete it's assigned task.. it surely will promote budding... but only time will develop a bud..lots of sun.. water...perhaps some bottom heat from an asphalt /concrete drive might move it along as fast as possible... speeding up cycleing from wet to dry...more extreme flips from hot to cool...
Spray-n-Grow is good for setting buds..and getting them to bloom.. the bloom booster type ferts are good for over comming the heavy " N " of the cow manure..

Thanks, guys.
It seems I will just have to "tell" everyone about my beautiful flowers instead of showing them. :-)

Lora, the next best thing would be to enlarge photos of previous flushes and place the photos next to the plants.

Oh, what a great idea!
