Guava Skipper ovipositing :o)

Edinburg, TX

Was out in the yard this afternoon and saw a Guava Skipper (phocides polybius) flitting around at 6pm. I ran back inside to get my camera...was able to get one decent photo of it laying an egg. Sorry...was too excited to finally catch it in the act that most of the other photos are blurry.

The Guava tree (psidium guajava) has about 40 eggs on it now...as well as about six or seven little caterpillars. The strawberry guava bushes (psidium cattleianum) have only about five eggs and one little caterpillar so far. Not sure if they just don't go to the bushes as they are in the shade...or they just don't like the leaves.

ps...you can see the green egg in front (not in back) of the bootie.

Oh, how pretty. I like the dark butterflies. : ) The white fringe on that one just sets it off.
