Episcia 'Silver Skies' in bloom

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

These make such nice gifts for people.....This is what i am trying to achieve before the day is over......
In order to get this done, I must get off DG and clean the front porch first!!!!!!! (LOL)

I admit this is a gamble because i really don't know which grow small like this one and which episcias would cover a bowl like this from Hobby Lobby...

looks good!

There aren't that many small ones. Silver Skies, Toy Silver, Aloha Mauna Loa I think? Annette? Silver Skies is the one that seems to be distributed most widely.

Aww, that's adorable, Gail! Very simple and clean. I love it! :o)

Shucks, Ki!!!!! I guess I have to order some more episcias for this purpose.......
hey, Rain................i bought it this way a couple of months back but it is really growing......and spreading...I was not the creative person behind this project.

I think it would be fun to grow a lot of tiny tiny plants ..............and make terrariums out of them......going to search for small rex and other begonias to go along with episcias....

Gail, Love that 'Silver Skies'! I think some of your Mini AV's would look great in these bowls ... just need enough room on the plant stands for the bowls! :) I have planted two AV's in glass containers. I love planting in glass containers/terrariums! I need a few more plant stands but alas, no room. :( My house is so small, wish I could talk hubby into building a second story on the house! We could just knock out all the inside walls on the ground floor, live on the second floor and all plant life could have the downstairs ... doesn't that sound like a great idea? There could be a loft area overlooking all the plants below and a balcony overlooking the pool area and all the plants out there!

Awe...how cute is that!!
I have one called Silver Emblem that's pretty tiny...it looks just like Silver Skies or Toy SIlver...I personall think they are all the same with different names. Mine has blooms on it too...can't wait.

Just a note about lil guys in terrariums...they bloom better if you plant them in the lil pot in the terrarium... I've even buried a container for wicking the lil rascals :)

Very pretty gail!

Hi Jan, I think you are lucky!! I would like to have nice big ones like that......I have heard from another DGer that they are really big and pretty with giant leaves (like yours) when you always remove the stolens as soon as they appear.

I suppose you could lift it out and see how it grows.......how big is that container....

That's is very pretty gessiegail, and they do make a much appreciated gift! Just a week ago I gave one I had made to my aunt as part of her anniversary gift. She loved it. It was one of my first tries at one and I think most everything I put in it will eventually out grow it but it made a pretty gift with some small begonia starts in it along with a mini trailing violet that I hope will spread and fill it like the episcia is doing in your above. The picture below was while I was working on it and I ended up taking the bigger AV out and putting a small variegated trailer right in front. I should have taken another picture!

On a side note I have Aloha Mauna Loa and I assumed it was named after a volcano because it is a big and fast grower!

jannich I too have a silver skies that is blooming, it's about 6 months old and mine has never put out one stolen either.

plantladylin I love your idea of converting the downstairs to just plants : )) My DH thinks I already have but I could fit a lot more and I'm working on it!

Looks nice! I should do more of these.

Interesting on Aloha Mauna Loa - someone included it on a list of minis and I assumed they knew what they were talking about.

I really don't have time to do this but fun, none the less........................I am sure your aunt will be excited, bmedel!!!

Oh, Bigred .... Beautiful 'Silver Skies' and Beautiful Little Gal holding her!

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

I hang them out on the front porch(north side of house)in spring as soon as it's passed any chance of frost then bring them in,in Oct.

That's my youngest GD,Savannah. I'm riding herd on her 5 days a week until school starts again in Aug. because her big sister got her first summer job and big brother is only 14 and not what I consider attentive enough to watch such a demon seed.

So sorry..you can tell I'm off in lala land I didn't even see the beauty holding the plant!
Oh she is a cutie for sure...look at that smile...I'll bet she's a handful!

Thanks Red... I think I'm gonna give a few a try outside... It couldn't hurt
I've been toying with the idea of throwing a few noidsAV's out too...There's just not enough room!!!
lol

Bigrid.....that is one big silver skies!!!!!
i take the little one any day.............she's adorable with the biggest smile!!!!

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Oh what a cutie!
And the plant is nice too:) Thanks for posting the picture. I wonder if I can take mine out of the jar and put it in a hanging pot outside for the summer? Maybe it would get stolens.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I think that sounds like an excellent idea, Jan!!! I might try that also on some of my inside plants.......

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

I've got all my episcias in hanging baskets outside for the summer. My porch is too shadey for av's and the shelf on the wall get's too much sun for them.
