Lily Leaf Beetle (Lilioceris lilii)
Just found this nasty beetle on my lilies today. The weather here has been unbearably hot for this region (90 degrees for several days) so I haven't made my daily rounds through the garden. There are beetles, larvae (they are disgusting and look like a clump of excrement - some are brown and some are orange) and eggs - all devouring the same lily. All very disgusting.. There were 4 plants covered with them so I cut the lily down to the ground and bagged what was left of the stem for the trash. I noticed a lot of excrement-like larvae on the ground so scooped them up and bagged them as well. If anyone has advice for what to do next, please post it. This is the first time I've seen this beetle in my garden. Yuck.

All I can suggest is to keep a daily watch for them. I find they arrive on hot days, mostly in threes, a pair and a spare. If you look under the leaves, as well as amongst the new foliage where it's close at the top you should get most of them.
Also look for them where your lilies are in spring when you clean up, I usually find a couple amongst the litter on the ground. They can fly but don't seem to take off, but will drop suddenly to the ground so put your hand under the leaf to catch them.
I've only had 63 so far this year! Yes I count them! My first year was around 3 years ago, with only a dozen or so. Then it was over 100, then over 200 last year even though it was very cold in summer.
