Because it is related to the European Cuckoo, which does say 'cuckoo'

OH MY .. DonnaB !!
Now, jes how special a treat can a body be bestowed!

LUV those spots on the underside of his tail feathers!!

Have you ever seen them there about, ever before -?-

Other than my seeing them in books or on tv nature programs (or your spectacular images, here) - I was beginning to think that the Cuckoo's were part of someones' vivid (& 'koo-koo') imagination .. (hee)

clump, clump, clump .. you say. Will you elaborate a bit more?

Great pics Donna!! I have never seen these myself except from other peoples pics.
They are such a neat looking bird! Thanks for posting these!

I didn't have them when I lived on the immediate coast but have them all over 20 miles north at our new home in the country. It always comes and watches me when I am watering but got lucky the other day and it came close when I was taking flower pics. Usually don't see it when I am out with the camera

Magpye that is what its call sounds like to me clump, clump, clump. Says it real fast sometimes

Within the exception of myself, of course - I've been known to be a bit cuckoo at times.

Thanks for the info, Resin!

For the longest time I thought that noise I was hearing was from machinery. Here is a link to a recording of the "clump clump clump" sound.

I have never been lucky enough to see the beautiful tails on these birds before, thanks for the pictures.

It certainly does sound like machinery - thanks so much for sharing!!
