My Ginger Is Blooming!

Schriever, LA(Zone 9a)

Just in time for a family reunion barbecue we're hosting this weekend. How accommodating is that?

that is very cool! The variegated version is harder to have bloom, I think, then the regular green foliage. You did good!! I really like shell ginger-esp up close

I love shell ginger! Just started some this year and I'm thrilled to see your blooms. Here I doubt I will get flowers, but I plant to keep them in the GH this winter. Very nice pics!

I have it in the ground, planted it last summer and it actually came back-as did the variegated shell ginger! I was shocked-never thought either would come back. I don't think they will bloom here either...

Sweet! I am so excited I can leave my var. shell ginger in the ground, I was so ready to have to dig it and put it in the greenhouse.

Thanks tigerlily...wait, maybe I should leave a small piece in the GH just to try and scare up a bloom. Do you mulch yours pretty hard? I'm surprised PDN doesn't have it in their catalog then.

I had it in a really protected spot ( the variegated), but not the reg shell ginger-that was out in the open. You could divide it, if it is big enough-but I would do it now, not in the fall, when you would be disturbing the roots too much for it to recover and grow before the cold sets in.

I did much it, but only about 4" or so.

Very pretty, I really like your second picture! Mine have never bloomed here either - probably not enough humidity?

Amarantha,
They get full morning sun for several hours and afternoon dappled shade because they are under an oak. I would think they probably do appreciate the humidity we have here. Mine did not bloom until they matured to this size and now they bloom each year. I really don't give them any special care.

Location may be the trick. Mine also gets morning light and afternoon shade and it has been blooming it's head off for a couple of weeks. Most people are stunned to learn it blooms here.

i hope mine blooms and looks as good as yours! that row is just stunning.
