peach tree-fruit starts to form but withers and falls off

Bloomingdale, NJ(Zone 6a)

I have a peach tree that i obtained from a friend a couple years ago, It has never produced any fruit. The last two years, the tree has flowered profusely, then gotten lots of little fruits, that just seem to wither /dry up, and fall off the tree. Lasr year it didn't produce any full sized fruit. This year the same thing seems to be happening, Last year I pretty much left it on its own, so this year I decided to fertilize and water. Doesn't seem to be helping. Anybody got any ideas?

A tree has to be healthy and stress free to produce fruit. In addition, if you had a freeze around the time your tree bloomed, the cold will have damaged the flowers. Result — no fruit. That's what happened to my peach and plum trees this year. Take care of it this year and see what happens next year. There is also the possibility that your tree may bloom too early in your area. Wait and see.

You also need to look at the fallen fruits and see if they are bug-damaged. The plum curculio has cleared entire trees of mine of the small fruits. The worm eats the seed and that causes the tree to abort that fruitlet.
