Aristolochia Serpentaria does anyone have it?

New Port Richey, FL(Zone 9b)

It's also known as Virgina Snakeroot. It's the host larval plant for the Pipevine Swallowtail.I did a google search to see who had it for sale.Alot of uses for snakeoil salesman and a cure-all for everything from baldness to piles but I didn't see anyone selling plants or seeds, wondering why.Maybe it's hard to grow or is a unattactive flower on the vine.Anyone know why? Does anyone grow it?

It is an endangered plant. Which is probably why no one is selling it. See this link:

I found this link to a nursery that lists it. Anyone know if this is a reliable nursery to order from? I haven't so I can't recommend it. I knew it is sold because a native plant nursery (no mail order there) that I go to had it. I have one but it isn't exactly flouishing in my soil and microclimate. No bloom yet and not much growth. I hope that some groups are propagating it and re-introducing it into appropriate protected wild areas where it won't be accessible to the nuts who steal rare but valuable plants from the wild. However, with the rampant development of virgin land that is going on nonstop and the human population explosion in our country, many species will inevitably have no viable place left to grow in the wild soon and will disappear forever.

My sentiments exactly, Linda! I am seeing progress and development in my beautiful city and I find it utterly irresponsible and unforgiving! We have a lot of gardeners and naturalists here, too, who have been fighting the city and county governments to save some large slices of our native Florida, but to no avail. Money talks! It's really a tragedy for every living thing .... not just people, but the native creatures as well. The next generation of children will not see and know about Florida what I know and see. Such a loss.

Awwww ..... geesh..... ya got me up on my soapbox! Sorry..... just gotta vent and rant sometimes! (sigh)

Becky,
The choir chanting AMEN!!!!

AMEN indeed, Don! It just burns my buns everyday when I see our native land being cut down, backhoed, and hauled to the county landfill or made into mulch. It's a crime! :-(

The county that I live in used to be so beautiful and now its been taken over by developers who had the money to pay to get in.

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
And a swinging hot spot
Dont it always seem to go
That you dont know what youve got
Till its gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

They took all the trees
Put em in a tree museum
And they charged the people
A dollar and a half just to see em
Dont it always seem to go
That you dont know what youve got
Till its gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Hey farmer farmer
Put away that d.d.t. now
Give me spots on my apples
But leave me the birds and the bees
Please!
Dont it always seem to go
That you dont know what youve got
Till its gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Late last night
I heard the screen door slam
And a big yellow taxi
Took away my old man
Dont it always seem to go
That you dont know what youve got
Till its gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

I understand that Aristolachia Serpenteria is a low growing plant, often found in lawns...Around here, our park ranger said that is is often overlooked along the roadsides and woods. According to him, it is the A. that our swallowtails use for host plants.

Somewhere I have an address of a fellow who sells it and I will try to locate it. Although A. serp. grows rather naturally, the plants don't grow so fast (like a trumpet vine) so if you are thinking of using them to feed cats you will need to build up your plant stock.

Now if I can only find that address!
