I had a beautiful flowering maple plant growing in a pot under my car port. It got morning sun and was doing great until two days ago when it wilted. It had wilted before but when watered revived. This time when I watered it nothing happened. I don't think I overwatered because with the heat here in Mississippi I was having to water every day. Does anyone have any advice? Can I still take cuttings of a wilted plant? I have saved a few seeds but most of the blooms currently on the plant aren't mature. Any comments or suggestions will be appreciated.
flowering maple
Most Maples are a little fussy, potted ones more so, they prefere to be in a cooler dappled shaded area where direct sun light is limited to the early sun rise or sunset, idealy potted maples should never be allowed to dry out, because wilt and leaf loss is a result, if your maple has buds present for new growth it will be ok, other wise you will have to wait till next spring to see if it will wake, i had a small Japanese Maple do that to me in August two years ago, so i moved it to a cooler shady area it is now doing find again, good luck.
Allen - I think she's talking about abutilon. Here it's commonly called flowering maple because of the maple shaped leaves.
Sounds like your talking about maple (acer) trees?
I'd give you some advice pnewman if I had any but I've never grown abutilons. I know when plants wilt after division they revive much better if they're kept cool and put in the shade. Sometimes I'll even bring them iside if it's really hot out.
