florida Sinningia

This is Sinningia Tampa Bay Beauty x self. It was hybridized by a nursery in Florida and I grew it from seed from either the GesSoc seed fund or ... I'm not sure. Probably the seed fund.

growers have said how it is a scraggly grower - it's a type of sinn that spreads out and branches - and how the leaves are floppy etc. Not a good one for showing.

It was languishing on my plant shelves......

So when I found out that it was hybridized by a nursery (not a gessie-only type enthusiast per se) in Florida, I decided to stick it outside. We are heat zone 7 so it's fairly hot and humid out there.

It is doing much better! and I have my first buds and flower today.

This is what it looks like in a window box. It's still a small plant and I have no idea if it will get a LOT bigger or just a bit bigger....

Anyway, it was about to get sent to the compost pile if it didn't perform this season and I think it got the message!

Very pretty! Nice to see them straighten up and fly right! ;o) When did you sow the seeds for it?

Do you find that the Sinns prefer sunlight to artifical light? I could rearrange and put them in the window if that would help. All the plants in my west windows seem to be doing quite well, enjoying the evening sun, so it's worth a shot, I guess. I want my Sinn. cardinalis to bloom, so I may toss it in the window and see what happens...

Y'all can consider me the "Compost Pile" any time you have a plant that isn't being obedient! :)

Wow Key ... that is Lovely! It must love that window box. Keep those pic's coming, can't wait to see it when the buds open fully!

That's pretty one. Good for you giving it what for!
Even our plants need tough love sometimes..;-)

I wish I were better at laying down the law with some of mine...
I did manage to cull a bunch of plants from my stands before we made the move...
Please post update pics with it's size & preformance...I don't try lots of plants because it's so darn hard to tell how big they get or what their habits are.

2 or 3 years ago. Note to self: mark tags with sowing date!

Some of the bigger ones do. (Actually some of the bigger ones are several feet tall so they wouldn't fit under lights.) Cardinalis, eumorpha and leucotricha are generally said to be fine under lights, but they would also grow well in a window sill - may even grow better - I've never tried it because I don't have so little window space.

On a windowsill, they would go dormant naturally, which I think is a plus because I still think that they do like to get a break. Of course, there is the issue with some of them never waking up..... (Sinn piresiana is still not waking up and since that one is also several years old but has yet to flower, I really do want it to break dormancy!)

Under lights, it is easier to keep the dormancy period close to zero - let the old growth start to die back *after* new growth appears at the base. But then they don't get much of a rest.

The minis and micro minis do better under lights, I think.

These types of things might be candidates for pots outdoors - bring them in to a garage or something in the winter? I'm not sure what the cold tolerance of this one is, but many will be happy down to the 40s. The other issue is that some Sinn tubers are very tasty......

Here's a pic of the same plants in February. You can see how weak the growth looks. I repotted them in Feb, and then stuck them in the window box in late April. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/715840/

Lets hope our weather doesn't rot the tubers off....

Ki, I just love the plants like you are showing, but i rarely see them in the vendor's list......do you know who sells the larger sinningias?:?:

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Really nice. Like it a lot.

So pretty, Ki! Wish my darn S. cardinalis would get that big and bloom!

Hi Gail,
http://yuccado.com/ probably has the largest number of the larger ones for sale. (ooooh, they have a sale!)

Ki, why did you do that?? I mean, posting the link was fine...but you had to mention a sale?? LOL

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Ki, I can hardly wait to get to that site.............thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

what am I doing wrong.............i don't see any sinningia on this site??

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

Well, the "good" thing is that they only have a little more than a handful. For more, you have to grow from seed or cuttings....

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I didn't even see the few....going back and look again....

Search for Sinningia in the search box at the top, Gail. I found 15 of them.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

can't find them????

edited to say i can't spell (LOL)

Hold on. Let me go see if I can make a link for you. BRB

OK It won't let me.

Click Ki's link and at the very top of the page toward the left it says "Plant Search" and a white box next to it. Type in Sinningia and click the green arrow to the right of the white box. I get 15 results when I do that.

I found them another way. Go to this link: http://yuccado.com/displayengine//where%20ygroup=%27Bulbs,%20corms,%20tubers%27/back/15/6/Bulbs,%20Corms,%20Tubers and scroll all the way to the bottom of the page. There's one Sinningia at the bottom of this page, then to see the rest of them, click "Next 15" and you'll find the others on that next page.

No one told me that defoliata was gonna get that big! (I have seedlings.)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I looked at them and actually placed an order for 3, but can't decide what to do.........they are in pints and quarts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I thought these little guys were for growing in the house!!????

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

Uh, no.... These would be better outside.... I don't grow the big ones because I don't have the outdoor space for them, and they won't fit under lights.

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Gail, maybe you can grow them on that gorgeous porch???

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

that is a good thought.......thanks ladies!!!!
