How many under water?

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

Day before yesterday we had a real gully washer of a rainstorm. I'm not sure how much rain we got but there are places in my fields that are still in puddle. I drove down to Pinconning yesterday and while going through Omer and Standish I noticed a lot of the farms had huge portions of their fields under water and they were planted too. I'm not sure those seedlings will make it if the water doesn't go down fast.

When we had our pond dug I had them put all the topsoil on my veggie garden spot. I'm glad I did. It's nice and high and sits in between two trenches that hold the water. My plants are growing but I really need to get out there and hoe out that wild grass soon before it takes over. I ordered a new hoe I'm eager to try out. It's a scuttle hoe that cuts when pushed forward or pulled back. I hope I like it.

I've observed the wildlife a lot the last few days even during the day. The deer are out in great numbers and I even saw a red fox yesterday. The rabbits were chasing each other all around my veggie garden trying to figure out how to get in. :) I sure hope they don't decide to tunnel under. It must be mating season or something. Everyone seems to be running. :) I'm hoping to get out to do some mowing today before it rains again.

Happy Gardening!!

Hey! I live in Pinconning....and yes, this rain has caused the wildlife to go mad, at least the frogs. Some nights, especially humid nights, the frogs have been going crazy! I'm finally seeing more butteflies flittering around too.

I was just in Pinconning yesterday. My friend moved up here and I'm trying to show her some of my favorite places. We went to Valleys to stock up on meat then went over the Northwoods to look around. It's not to awfully far from AuGres.

Brenda..................those fields you see which are flooded are because they are not tiled....the water will go down....

We are seeing the deer come outta the woods during the day now also.....We think the skeeters are driving them out of the woods....

Deann

Deann,

Did they spray your woods yet for mosquitos? I think they did ours. I saw an orange plane flying really really low over my property. I thought he was going to crash into the trees. The mosquitos haven't been too bad here. The fishflies or whatever you call them were bad for a bit but they seem to be gone now too.

We had a baby fawn born out in our fields a couple weeks ago. It sure was cute. It could hardly walk. I haven't seen it lately. I hope someone didn't eat it. Maybe it's in the woods with mama. I hope so.

I was out hoeing in the veggie garden all day. I have a big blister on my hand. I bought a new hoe I like. It's triangle shaped and sharp like a razor and just cuts the little heads off all the bad old weeds. I think it's a type of scuttle hoe. I'm almost done. Just have to weed the asparagus.

Hope all is good over your way Deann.

Why are you not using your Manthis for your veggie garden.......so much easier.....however your rows have to be at least 24 inches apart....

The baby fawn is probably tucked in safe somewhere in your woods close by.....typically they lay there perfectely still and not move a muscle. I have not seen babies yet......

They sprayed our area with that ariel plane over a month ago.....now the guy comes back with the truck and fogs......he said my area was one of the worst in Arenac county. Its getting pretty bad out there, and I now work with my Bug Baffler on. Its an outfit my daughter got me one year for a gift....Its green mesh, and it covers you completley....not exactely a fashion statement, but keeps the skeeters off of me.

I have been visiting my daughter in Indiana now for almost a week, and will be leaving tomorrow to come home.....I hate to even think about the weeds I am gonna find.....

Our rows are not two feet apart. Vern planted this year and everything is close together. We did it the same way last year when I planted. That works good once everything is up good. THe plants shade the soil so you don't have so much weeds. It's just when they are little like now you have to hoe. If I had been hoeing once a week from the time I planted this wouldn't have happened. I got busy doing other chores but I won't make that mistake again. :)

Glad you had a nice visit with your daughter. Hope to get together with you some time this summer.

I ordered off of Ebay. That is how I do most of my shopping. Just type into search scuttle hoe and scan down till you find one you like.

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

thanks I'll look that up thay are so nice to have around
Gloria

I think it's a scuffle hoe. :) Just put in hoe and look in the home and garden section and a variety of them will come up.

okay G.

Boy I know when you were talking about all of the rain we had rain for two solid days. I still really havent had to water kinda nice for the water bill huh. Alot of you all probably have wells huh? We live in the city and have to pay. Oh well thats the breaks for having flowers huh? Have a great monday everyone. Ronna

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

Hi Ronna,

Yes we have a well. My son is a plumber and recently was working on putting in meters at a campground here that is on well. I guess the powers that be have decided that they own the water coming out of our wells and so my son has been putting meters in. The campground will have to start paying for the water coming out of their wells.

How long before they start doing that to just plain old homeowners? That water is on our property and does not cost the .gov anything to go to a treatment plant and have chemicals put in it or anything. I don't know how they get away with charging for well water.

What's next?

Brenda

Au Gres, MI(Zone 5a)

Loon.....Oh Wow! Now that is a hot topic......no way would I pay for water that is coming off of my property.....Are the Campground people just trying to make an extra buck or are they being forced to do so by the county???

Deann

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

They are being forced to by the county.

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

Wow I'd be raising a holy fit how can thay do that? I have a well also
Gloria

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Wow! Would that be like mineral rights? Someone in the govt got a raise off that idea! That is crazy!
I never heard of such a thing. We have well water here, but water the lawn etc with lake water. They could charge for that too.
This is why people do not live to be over 100 years old. The changes get too much for people. I see why my grandparents were grumpy when they got old now. I am getting old and grumpy too.
My last tanget was last week when I saw a warning label on a candy bar that said something like...this is a snack..eat in moderation. Ugh!

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

I water with lake water too I wonder how long that will last but you have to be careful for when thay treat the lake for weeds which is tomarrow thay say you can use the water in 24 hours I wait for 3 days
Gloria

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

I asked my son again who it was that was making the campground put in the meters on the wells and he said it was the D.E.Q.

That's all I know. So far it seems to not be affecting individual residences.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

But is it the next step? Why is a campground with a well different than a house? This is an outrage, it is crazy....it is just not right.

Au Gres, MI(Zone 5a)

I tell you what......I live in Arenac County, and I would fight this tooth and nail.....there is no way I would pay for water that is on my property....

Deann

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

I'm with you girils I would be just hopping mad when will this kind of thing end and how far will the masses let it go so that thay don't have to make waves and get some one mad I have enough problems with Midland county and the lake assosiation geezee
Gloria

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Don't get into lakes. Our Dam is going to be repaired. First it was 4 million, now down to 2 million, even though it is a PUBLIC lake, the 400 lake owners have to pay nearly all the cost 95%.....yet we have had no say in the matter, other than several lawsuits. It has taken 4 years to even get an estimate of what each person would need to pay. They were going to drain our lake until resolved, then the association filed the lawsuit. A judge had to say they could not do that. It has been a mess.

Melvindale, MI(Zone 5a)

I would fight this too. Every homeowner that has a well, if this comes to pass, should file a lawsuit. This is nothing more than criminal.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

If you own the well, (being that you paid to put it in yourself, or purchased the property with well) then how can they charge for the water that comes out of it?

Melvindale, MI(Zone 5a)

My husband said that no one owns mineral rights on their land, so if they insisted that water was a mineral, then they got everyone.

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

I still will never think thats right and I think more people should ge involved in there own things that are going on around them thay would be shocked.
Gloria

Melvindale, MI(Zone 5a)

It's not right, I think its down right criminal.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

I am not sure, but even mineral rights are listed out as gas, oil, etc, aren't they?

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

I think with the gov. it's subject to change as thay see fit seems like it any ways
Gloria
