Anybody else use a fly sheet to keep the buggers off their horses? I know, I know... I live in South Texas, I must be nuts!!! The slightest bug bite, and Chewie gets these nasty swollen bumps all over him, like I do when a mosquito nibbles on me. So, I bought him a fly sheet & a fly mask, since all the fly sprays I've tried don't seem to keep all the bugs off...
Well, we had a low of 70 last night, and I put Chewie's new "Defender" fly turnout sheet on him all night. This am, no sweat, and he didn't feel hot. He was stalled all night, so moderate air movement around him, but not the normal breeze of being turned out.
Took it off, expecting a high of 92 today, and he's still stalled.
Is it completely nuts to use a fly sheet in this weather? Is it safe to try it for a day of turnout without being home? He drinks well, all the time. I figure, he'll sweat, but the lighter tan fly sheet is lighter than his dark chestnut coat, so maybe it'll repel heat rather than absorb it... The sheet is supposed to "block bugs & UV rays from damaging the horse's coat & skin".
Feedback? Thoughts? And, yes, I confess, he's spoiled... Spoiled rotten. :) He did pitch the fly mask overnight, which I promptly put on Romeo this morning. If Romeo keeps it on, he can keep the fly mask... I don't think Chewie will mind one bit.
