Tonight I found a pigeon on my porch. I didn't touch it, but I didn't want to just leave it there. Put grass and newspaper inside my dogs old puppy crate, with some bread and water. The pigeon hasn't touched any of it yet. I left the door open on the cage in case it wants to get out, but I'm also afraid another animal will get to it tonight. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about birds or what to do in this type of situation. This is a crazy question - but can a vet fix it's wing, or I guess the question is will he fix it. I thought about calling mine in the morning, but I don't want to sound foolish. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.
Pigeon with broken wing on my covered porch - what can I do?
An avian vet would be very expensive but maybe they or the county could give you the number for a wildlife rehab close by.
Thanks for your reply. I didn't sleep well last night because I was trying to get it to drink some water. I used a childrens size paint brush and it would drink off of that. When I woke up this morning I located a wildbird sanctuary and rehab an hour away from my home. Anyway, I drove the pigeon there and just returned a little bit ago. So, I hope it's going to be okay. At least if they have to put it down it will be quickly and humanely. Thanks again.
Bless you for caring! Glad you made contact with the rehab. Good going!
I just wanted to post the outcome of my pigeon situation here. I called the wildbird sanctuary later that day and found that the pigeon had to be euthanized. His wing was badly broken and he also had a virus that affects pigeons. Anyway, I'm just happy he was able to be put down in a more humane manner.
I'm sorry. It's hard to take when we try so hard to do the right thing, and the results aren't what we'd hope for.
