I was browsing through today and saw this...did not know such a name existed...thought it looked like the pink princess....however they say the leaves are rather larger then the pink princess...I can't afford to pay what they want but will keep my eyes peeled.... I love anything that is "pink"

Ever heard of a pink lady???
The seller is a member here at DG, too. I;ve bought a couple of philos from him- he's a collector out of Miami. He sends very good plants. Pricey, but worth it. He specializes in variegated plants too. Did you see his website? Anyway, that plant looks like Pink Princess to me. I sometimes believe names get distorted in the trade and you end up with names like 'Pink Lady', when it's really a 'Pink Princess'.
Hiya Sharon! How are you? I haven't seen you posting lately ... but then again, it could just be me not seeing your posts! I was out of town for a week and missed a lot! And, now I'm trying to get caught up here at home and on DG!

edited to say: "See" .... I'm so "off", I forgot to say: I Love 'Painted Lady' ... I've never seen that one before either! Really pretty!

I won a painted lady off Ebay a few years back-advertised in a 6 inch pot. When I received it, it was tiny and sickly stuck in a 6 inch pot. Needless to say it didn't survive and that's all my experience with the "Painted Lady". Sharon, that's a lovely plant. Thanks for posting the picture.

I agree w/GH that the names get mixed up.
I think Steve does say on his website that he 'believes' it to be a different plant because the leaves seem to grow larger and that perhaps (not sure - my opinion) he gave it the name Pink lady due to that observation.
I think it's Pink Princess, as well.
I've bought a few plants from him, too....never a disappointment.
I thought this was interesting since I'd already seen this auction on eBay before seeing the forum. I sent the seller a copy of what was being said and here are his remarks:

There are 2 forms of this plant. I have had them both in my collection for years. The smaller leafed form (and most often available) is a cultivar originally from Australia (philo. Pink Princess). The larger leafed form is Philo Pink Lady. I have grown them side by side for years and Pink Princess is slower growing and will never get the larger leaves. Pink Lady is faster growing and produces larger leaves right away. I also have 3 different philos very similar in appearance to Painted Lady! 2 of them I do not know the correct ID. One has very deep red coloration on the undersides of the leaves with very bright spotted yellowish white leaves. A customer traded this one for me a few years back and told me it had cost her $350!!!! I have never seen it anywhere else before. If it is grown in the shade, the leaves are almost green, and the leaves get at least double the size of normal Painted Lady. One is the 'normal' Painted Lady, the last is one with longer more pointed leaves.

I hope this helps - it SURE is a VERY beautiful plant!
Great info...thanks for posting it!
I've noted, though, that Steve states where Pink Princess originated (Australia) but he doesn't state where Pink Lady originated.
You didn't happen to ask him, did you AmandaT?
Doesn't matter, I guess ...I know that if Steve says it has larger leaves than PP, it DOES!
Hi Nan, I sent him another email with your question and here is his reply:

No I really dont know where it came from, most likely it is a hybrid cross, perhaps between Black Cardinal and Pink Princess? Here is a photo of a mature specimen of Pink Lady, it is growing in a black 3 gal pot (10" dia) so you can really see how large the leaves can get! I have never seen Pink Princess get leaves any larger than perhaps 6" dia at the biggest.

I'm attaching the picture he sent ... Hope this helps!
Wow! Love it! I think Philo 'Pink Lady' will be added to my wish list!
Amanda, Thanks for posting all this great info!
Thanks! Good to know.
And of course we all know, BIG leaves are GOOD!!
So pretty, senlarrs!
Thank you.
I have the pink lady and the pink princess... The first has much bigger leaves... I almost killed the pink princess but she is coming back now I am happy to say... To late to take a picture of the pink lady but if ya want I will send one tomorrow...
Susan
Susan, I would love to see a pic of your 'Pink Lady'!!
GH
Very nice, Susan!
This is just what we needed...someone who has both to compare the pros & cons!
Hope you don't mind a couple of questions. (Ü)
Do you have a preference of which you like better, or are they 'equal in different ways'?
Aside from the leaf size, is the growth habit different?
Pink princess seems to have 'humidity issues'....does Pink Lady have those same issues?
Pink princess seems to grow rather 'viney/leggy'....does Pink Lady?
Yours looks like some nice solid upright growth.
Ok now THAT is beautiful ... I love pictures of the whole plant. A lot of people on here don't do taht type of thing. They do closeups of leaves or flowers, not the whole thing in an easily understood perspective. Thanks!
It IS beautiful Susan!!! I'd love to know if it grows leggy like PP, as does Nan. My PP is so tall/leggy. I could probably start a few new plants with it. I want to cut it, but am scared I'll mess it up! :)
Hi,
Thanks, First I like the pink lady so far better... It seems to be a stronger plant. I put them both out in the sun and then my DIL and Son went and had a baby and we ran to the hospital and I forgot all about the plants..LOL I am lucky they are still here but you know when nature calls you run :-)
The pink lady had some burned leaves and the pink princess burnt! I have one new leave coming out of the princess... I take no credit for the pink lady for that is how it came... It is a beauty..
I now have the princess in the house where she is trying to put out a leaf. I have the pink lady outside in a sunny but shady place and she is doing nicely... I dont think the pink lady will get to leggy from the shape of the stems it is compact but thick...
I just take the picture of the plant why would you want just a leaf??? I am sending the other two I took of it... really once again does not do the plant justice... Its colors when I first got it were just beautiful, until I burnt it... oh well....
I will take a picture of my poor sick looking pink princess tomorrow after we come home from my Grandaughers birthday party.. she will be 6, wow how time fly...
I am not really good at explaining things about flowers and such, if it lives I grow it, if not oh theres another on who bit the dust. :-) I did want both of these to live as I paid what I consider allot of money .. I know for the pink lady I paid 20.00 cant remember the other. I went to WalMart and I swear there is a bigger pink lady for 22.00 but it does not say it is this... It looks pretty close if it is not...
