lining a small pond with fiberglass

marshville,, NC(Zone 8a)

We have a small pond that we are enlarging to include a bog garden and short stream...we cannot afford a large enough liner and are considering using fiberglass to line the pond and bog..
i cannot find a reference to this...has anyone tried it?...there will be no fish for a while, just plants......our dogs love getting in the water so we will make the bottom extra tough and covered with small rock/pebbles....area is very freeform and would require a huge liner....suggestions?

I got a small preformed fiberglass pool a couple of years ago at a garage sale and it held up wonderfully to just about anything. I have never tried to build anything of fiberglass so do not know the expense or work involved, but they make swimming pools out of that don't they? Don't see why a lily pond would not work.

thanks for the reply, tetley...yes, sure they do...we were going to use the kind of fiberglass they use on cars...don't know if it's the same stuff & has something plants don't like in it.......u know...lay down the cloth & spray it with the other mixture, then sprinkle sand & pebbles to make the surface look natural......then we could put in a drain & water lines that are in the side of the pool instead of on the ground........but you're right...thanks

foggywalk, please post pictures of your process. I'd be willing to bet I'm not the only one that'd be interested in seeing it take shape.

Never heard of this :( Don't know anything about the process you speak of but it doesn't sound terribly strong for pond purposes.

Fiberglass is very strong if done right but I'm thinking it would be expensive to make a pond out of it.

DS has worked with fiberglass a lot & we have some materials on hand...from the replies, I believe we'll go ahead with the project.

We'll have to check the current prices of materials, but it can't be too much more than the various pond liners we have priced for such an area, I hope.....

we'll start the project as soon as we get all the materials we need...a few weeks, I think........and we will give you pictures for those interested.

Thanks
