My neighbor in Des Moines has a gorgeous example of this tree, and I want one. But two things: there seems to be two varieties: one, like my neighbors, has leaves with medium green centers, then cream color with pink edges. Beautiful tree. The other variety I see on line is mostly dark purple in the middle, with lighter magenta edges. I prefer my neighbors variety.
Here is the problem: I cannot find one anywhere. I prefer to find one locally as they are slow growing, and I would like at least a 6' tree to plant.
My question for the forum is two parts: One,ARE there two varieties with the same name; and two, where can I maybe find one to plant?
tri color beech
Hi bolwar. Are you in Iowa or part of the NW? That would narrow down the request for where to find trees.
Here's a link that makes it sounds as if there are at least two distinct tricolor beeches. Sounds like a beautiful tree! Hope you find one.

Thank you,Poochella. I had read this before, and it indeed is interesting. I am in Iowa. I went to a local tree nursey close to my home at noon, and they told me they have tried to get specimens of this tri color to sell, but have had no luck. (Sigh). Guess I'll keep looking.
The one I've been installing in Oregon, is the one shown in a group of images on my page here:

Seems to do okay in full sun - both north Oregon and warmer south Oregon.
Apparently does optimum if it can fall within late afternoon shade of another tree. Either way, I like it a lot.
Labeled here as Tricolor beech.
That's a much better selection than the one in my image. I've seen the magenta edges burn brown in full sun.
