Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Broots (Linda) you for sure better have some insulating blankets ready! :S :S :S

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

Aw gee, thanks for thinking of me Pam :-) No snow or frost forecast for my areas of southern Ontario though, so I'm just fine. I hadn't heard the forecast for the north of Toronto area - I wonder if they were correct? Sure hope not for the sake of the poor gardeners in that area!

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Forecast for Ottawa is +4 tonight with risk of frost.

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

Brrrrrrrrrrrr! I hope they're wrong.

Rosemont, ON(Zone 4a)

The forecast for our nearest town, Alliston, is an overnight low of 3C. As we are at a higher elevation (in the Mulmur Hills) and in a frost pocket (a valley bottom), a freeze is a real possibility. The potted herbs and fuchsias will be spending the next couple of nights in the greenhouse; everything else will just have to take its chances!

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

Oh dear..... They've just updated the weather forecast for Blyth. The Wingham area (just 20 minutes north of me, and where they actually post the data from for Blyth) is now expected to get an overnight low of 1°C tonight.

Oh no! I have Brugs and Cannas and Callas and a Pineapple and a Sago Palm and.......wahhhhhhhhhhhhhh! All these things will just have to settle for being covered up in place - at least those that aren't already too tall to cover. Some are planted in the ground and others in half whiskey barrels. There is no way to move them into the garage overnight.

I'm just going to have to keep my fingers crossed and say all my prayers that, as often happens, we stay a few degrees warmer than Wingham.

Keep those smelling salts handy Pam!!!!!!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Sorry folks! At first I was tickled pink to see we'd get some rain (Canada wide) over the next couple of days. Then she started talking about what was in store for Ontario. :0

Ginny given your collection (they don't like temps under 5 degrees Celcius) I'd start eyeing all the kids' wagons in your neighborhood.

Think WARM thoughts foks (they could be wrong)

..........but just in case I'll keep the smelling salts handy (as well as a tissue or two). ;'(

North Augusta, ON

(gathering all the spare sheets and blankets)

Victoria Harbour, ON

I'm 30 minutes north of Barrie and they are calling for much the same...sure hope those plants can survive..just tooo many to cover...

Last week in office air couldn't give us relief from the heat, today, I've the micro-heater on..imagine!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Good heavens, I thought Calgary was the only place in Canada that got wacky spring weather! (ie. record snowfall this year on May 24th).

Will keep my fingers crossed for all your plants that they will be okay!

Let summer begin!!!

Joanne

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Joanne I'm thinking it was 3 or 4 years ago my location had snow around June 10, frost in July and snow/frost again in August (my then 77 year old father had never seen every month hit with it until that year) http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/451242/ . I'm betting Calgary prolly had a rotten summer that year too.

I feel really bad for the Ontario folks..........this must be just as rare for them, as that year was for us. I'm wondering if they are still running around with sheets (or have finished and taken their pot strained exhausted bodes to bed).

Well quiet Ontario I hope it remains warmer then they predict (or, at the very least, that all your plants are protected, cozy and remain green :).

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Well, my poor tomatoes are fending for themselves. I'm hoping that in the city it won't quite get to a frost. The Basil might suffer even before the tomatoes do though.

Drumheller, Canada(Zone 3b)

Oh I feel sorry for all of you threatened by frost. We are under a severe Thunderstorm Warning here and there has been tornado touch down around Edmonton..This weather is really getting crazy.

Orangeville, ON(Zone 4b)

I picked up whatever pots could be comfortably carried and put them in my unheated greenhouse (lug, lug, lug....why did I plant so much?). Then I threw a tarp over a bed comprised mainly of annual seedlings. DH wasn't keen on me using our bed sheets for other plants (selfish, selfish), so I found an unused shower curtain and got creative. Also rounded up some of those HD buckets and covered even more plants. It's pretty durn cold out there now, so here's to hoping for the best now.

And yes Pam, I got a crick in my shoulder in my pot moving frenzy!!!
You know what all us Ontario folk will be doing first thing tomorrow morning, lmao!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

:S ;'( :S Take care Alberta (and please don't share).

Crossing fingers for your maters Ann ....I also think a city the size of Ottawa would radiate enough heat to save them. :)

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

looking outside with trepidation Erynne? ;)

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I'll put kleenex out for myself too.......nickle sized hail is falling below my location and tornado warnings are flashing.

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

I hope you all to the west of Ontario avoided the hail, tornadoes, and severe thunderstorms - or at least suffered no damage because of them!

Our temperatures didn't get as low as originally predicted, but I think may have crept down below 5°C for a brief period very early this morning. There was no frost.

I did suffer something of a dilemma though. I have to leave my house just after 5:00 a.m. to drive to work, and the coldest part of the night/day is usually between 5 and 6. That meant I either had to cover everything and leave it covered all day until I got home tonight, or take my chances and leave everything as is. I chose as is, and I won't know until this evening when I get home if anything was damaged by the cool temperatures. All my fingers and toes are crossed!

How did all the rest of our Ontarians fare?

--Ginny

Rosemont, ON(Zone 4a)

Temperature dropped to 2C here last night, but now the sun is shining and it's warming up. Now I gotta get all the pots out of the greenhouse again, before they cook in there! I hope everyone else's plants managed to "dodge the bullet".

Mississauga, ON(Zone 6a)

Weather is crazy everywhere. I covered some plants with domes but haven't been out yet to check. Sorry for anyone who lost plants to frost. I lost some cukes to cold and wind last year and it so discouraging.
Start up again and hope for the best.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Well so far Ontario peeps look to be doing pretty good! :D

Hail didn't hit my yard (it got a nice rainfall instead :).....haven't checked my veggie patch on south hill yet though.

How did Alberta fare?

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

All was well in Ottawa. They spoke of +5 this morning; so I bet some of the outlying areas were hit, but in the city all OK.

Ann

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

We had 70 mm of rain overnight in Calgary, with another 20-30 mm forecast for today. Flooding in parts of the city, cars floating in water under over-passes, traffic lights out, general traffic chaos this mornng during rush hour. But other than that, it's a great day to be alive! LOL.

Joanne

North Augusta, ON

I dragged everything back into the house...so I thought....forgot a poor little variegated Hibiscus in the garden...he's looking a bit wilty this morning, but I'm hoping the adventure he had might make him bushier.....it got down to 5 here, but was windy all night, I believe the wind helped keep the frost away.

Cochrane, ON(Zone 2b)

Glad to hear that everyone made it through the 'frost scare' ok. I have given up on covering things this year. Just get tired of 'putting it on & taking it off'. Although first thing this am I ran outside to see if my salvia glutinosa was ok & it was. We had the snow bit yesterday & didn't get above 7º all day. The poor swallows, I didn't see them come out of their house at all. Nothing beats July 1/01 when it snowed all day long. That was the topic of conversation for quite awhile.

Pam, glad to hear that you didn't get any hail out your way. The things us gardeners have to endure.

Drumheller, Canada(Zone 3b)

Glad to hear there was no real damge from frost. Calgary is a mess but here we fared really well. I think we were just on the edge of it all. We actually ended up with a nice rain albeit hard at times, no damage. Now we have a couple of days of cool weather and more rain predicted..then hopefully nice for the weekend.

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

Update - Did a tour around my gardens when I got home last night. Other than a couple of wilted leaf edges on one Calla and one Castor Bean I had no damage at all that I can see. Whew! Dodged that one!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Darn the ground is so wet the tree movers phoned yesterday morning and cancelled planting my new Russian Olive today! NO idea when it will come now. Wanted it in for the RU weekend.
SOme parts of the city are quite a mess - roads bocked off because of damage from water , lots of flooded and totallly destroyed basements.

Kinnika are you going to come in and join some of our little Round Up gathering this weekend?

Drumheller, Canada(Zone 3b)

Fancy, I would really love to but I am a Matron of Honour for my friends wedding and I don't think she would appreciate it too much if I didn't show up. Have a great time.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Have fun at the round up girls/guys....wish there was one in my part of the world..lol..

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

Me too. I originally had travel plans for this year that would have allowed me to take in at least the one in B.C., but that was before one of my sheds collapsed and the other one had to be torn down - the support beams were completely rotted through. Oh well, now I'm getting one nice, new, *BIG* Mennonite made shed to replace them :-)

It would be nice to maybe think about arranging an RU for Ontario for next year. Then, no matter what might happen, I would be able to attend.
