San Antonio Help (not gardening related)

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Hello all you San Antonians!

My husband and I will be visiting SA on Friday evening and would like a recommendation for a good restaurant (preferably not on the River Walk). We're thinking anything under $100 but really good. We like all kinds of food.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Kristi

Can't tell you myself, it has been too long for this old brain since I was there. But here is a guide of restaurants in SA. Plus maybe bumping this up this morning will get someone in that area to respond. http://sanantoniotx.areaguides.net/restaurants.html?http://sanantoniotx.areaguides.net/spyellowpg/restaurants.html

Where (what area of town) are you going to be? Will you have your own transportation?

If you are looking for good Mexican food that is not on the Riverwalk, try La Fogata. It is a great restaurant and within the budget you have allotted.

I have several family members from around the country who insist on going there every time they come to town.

La Fogata is on Vance Jackson Road and looks like a hole in the wall that has been fixed up.

Enjoy

well since I'm here in SA I should know... but it would help to know how far from downtown you want to go....

Thanks ya'll. I'm gonna be in the I10/CVance Jackson area and yes, will have transportation so we're not limited to just that area.

La Fogata! That's the second recommendation I've received!

Since we return for our anniversary June 28th (38th this year), we love several SA restaurants. Always stay at the Menger - great food there, too.

Mexican - agree with La Fogata, and Mi Tiera, and for something a bit "old San Antonio" The Pan American. There are a bunch that I cannot remember names for, and one at 281 @ 46 - not Mexican, but used to have great enchilladas.

Steaks - Barn Door (traditional anniversary dinner for us - first steak house we ate at), Little Rhine Steak House - outstanding food, wine and service, but downtown.

Lunch/snack - Armadillo's - order the shy-poke eggs and a Shiner.
River Walk - Dick's Last Resort - be ready for some fun and insults

Breakfast - Sunday brunch @ Biga's on the River, Mama's (either location), breakfast buffet @ The Menger.

There are several "up scale" places on the north loop and out 281, as well as I10.

There are a bunch more in travel (where to eat - by state).

Enjoy yourself, Kristi.

We used to go to the Pan Am every weekend when I was a kid growing up. I remember when they were just a hole in the wall place before they moved to a MUCH bigger space with a nice fountain where we kids liked to hang out and dining room. Haven't been there in AGES!! Brings back lots of good memories.

Thanks Bubba! It's our anniversary on Friday night, too. We love the Menger. Those are great options!

Stephanietx,
Do you remember Hipps' Bubble Room, or Little Hipps? on McCullough.

My Hipp closed the restaurant and let all the employees go, then died a week later.

SACC bought the land where HBR was located and it is now a parking lot.

Little Hipps was renamed to just Hipps, but since his death is now reopened as Armadillos. They still serve the shy-poke eggs, but of course no longer sell the super frosted schooners of Pearl.

When HBR was in business in the 60's it was the #1 tap for the brewery. Loved the train that ran around the booths and bar, and the inside flowing Pearl sign - a miniature of the billboard on I35 in Dallas - real flowing water. Only lighting inside were dozens of Christmas bubble lights.

Pan American was where you could go - long after every thing else was closed - off somewhwere on Loop 13. They have moved. I asked the consierge at the Menger about them - he called and gave us the address. When we came back the next year, he remembered us, and thanked me for reminging him about the restaurant - said that he and his family had become "regulars: there again.

Happy Anniversary, Kristi.

The only place I can think of off hand is los Patios (sp?)... It might be closed though with all the rain we have had you might not can get to it.

I always loved going there... Haven't been in years.

If you want a great burger you could go to Chester's out on San Pedro. They also have a location on Loop 410, but it's not nearly as good as the 'original'! The Alamo Cafe out on San Pedro is excellent, too. They have the BEST flour tortillas around!

I do remember Hipps!! We ate there often as it was close to the eye doctor's office. Wonderful little place to eat. I remember when they closed down and sold all the furnishings. So sad.

Thanks for all the ideas everyone! I think we have decided on La Fogata for dinner and might try to find that Pan Am. Sounds interesting and fun!

I know you've made your decision, but I wanted to throw out two other possibilities for steak. The Barn Door on the North central side of town and/or The Little Red Barn. The Little Red Barn has the menu painted on the walls!!

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

No decision is set in stone! I'll look up that steakhouse. The Little Red Barn sounds fun too. I'll look that up aswell. Maybe lunch the next day? Thank you!

Like I said - we never miss the Barn Door.

I remember when they had a huge "free if you can finish it" steak.

That is no longer on the menu, but many more items are.

Little Red sells more steaks than anyone, but for us is more of a lunch place. Picnic tables, and all.

Cypress, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh, I love Little Red Barn. We lived down the street when I was small before we moved to Houston. Definitely more of a lunch place, but yummy!

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

That sounds like fun.

We'll have kids with us on Saturday (picking them up from camp Sat. morning) so they'll probably enjoy a place like the Barn Door. Especially after eating camp food for a week.
