believe it or not the following is in the bed....echinacea, shastas, 2 kinds of salvia, hollyhocks, crysanthemums, aztec grass, lemon grass....omg i went over board....; i am thinking that next year when i divide and conquer....that i take out some green and add some other color foliage...; or should i divide and replant in the fall?

Your garden is looking so lush and full you may have to widen your beds when you divide! I normally divide spring bloomers in the fall and fall bloomers in the spring. Some like daylilies seem to do better here if divided in the spring so they have more time to settle in before it gets cold, but you probably don't have to worry about that.

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Hmmmmmmm . . . I don't see any sign that says "Hubbie's Grass" so I don't see that you have a problem.

(Please don't tell him I said that!!!)

yah think he would notice??

I have one of those that thinks a yard full of grass all cut evenly is the goal.
After he saw the results of the cottage bed he is very encouraging and even helps when I need more room. Your results are beautiful. I have added a coleus or 3 and they give a little texture. We are all a work in progress.

My DH likes the grass look, with a few Rhodies and Azaleas (he also would like a putting green!), but is always complimentary of my work and tells people about it. I think he realizes it's what keeps me sane in this crazy world!

I think that is the part that has changed his mind about large flowerbeds. It is indeed my therapy. I am not quite so up-tight about every little thing being perfect in the house anymore. Allows both of us to enjoy life more.

gardening has definitely helped my brain and body....thank god for it.....even when i am hurting with my ailments i still have to get outside and DO STUFF!!!!

WELL DONE! I do see what you mean about adding different foliage colour. I have that problem too. I am trying to keep an eye on burgundy and silver foliage plants just to change it up a bit. I have added Artimesia "Powis Castle" for silver but nothing is grabbing my eye for burgundy. I did put some begonias in a shady spot but can't find much available for full sun.....Anyway just to give you some ideas. PS - Artemisia would look fabulous against your white fence and it's fast growing!!

khopton...will have a look at artemisia...i bought some purple fountain grass today....i think it would really set it off....like it needs anything else in that bed (grin)

i just set in the bed 2 purple fountain grasses that are little...but if they were bigger ....the difference would help...

The dark foliage is a pass a long from a neighbor long ago. She called it sweet basil and it spreads by itself every year. There are dozens of basil and I have several that I have planted from seed or starts. This is the most startling.

louc....i like the dark basil...also, what is the other plant below the basil on the lower right....is that lithianthus? (spelling is isn't my forte)

Sticks, love your picket fence garden!!!

Lou, terrific combination you've got there! Basil is an annual out here, but we always buy some.

Ah Fountain grass - of course!!! What a terrific addition - well done!!

Yes that is Lissie. Today it has fully opened and is beautiful. My last post was not very clear. I have other basil....cinnamon, dulce, and something else I can't remember. I plant herbs all over the beds not just a dedicated area.....my DH, cook uses them in his creations. Presently, I have let part of the cilantro go to seed so it will resow in the fall.

lou...your lissie looks a heck of alot better than mine....mine is awfull....but the bloom is exquisite....
