June 4 What's Blooming?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Gardener's World Lycnis is now in full bloom. Wonder if this would reseed the same red color? Or is it sterile?

Red Rock Penstemon is just starting to bloom.

Found this in a neighbor's yard while walking my dog this AM. I think it is Icicle Veronica.

Butterfly garden is kicking into gear, and the butterflies must be happy -- that garden's quivering with wings most hours of the day.

Beautiful garden. I bought a Butterfly Bush and another bush that attracts butterflies. What do you plant or have planted in your garden?

DFW area, TX(Zone 8a)

In that garden I have passiflora (cropped out by the edge of the picture), milkweed, turk's cap, lantana, hibiscus, verbena, snapdragons, Mexican mint marigold, creeping speedwell, lavender, coreopsis, rosemary, veronica, salvia, carolina jessamin -- it's truly a multi-colored affair, though not everything blooms at once until late June/early July, and the carolina jessamin has long since pulled in her yellow blooms.

The butterflies really seem to love the lantana and salvia just now.

Susannah, your butterfly garden is looking great. Hope you get some good butterfly photos as the season goes on.

gardenlady, Foxtail liliies or emerus need full sun and good drainage. Here is a good link about them:

It is the sandy soil and good drainage that I worry about here. Plus, I think they are just maginally hardy for this zone. Sure are pretty though and might be worth the extra effort of adding sand, ect.

Oooh, boy! Love that Gardener's World Lychnis, Susan. I just planted 'Morganrot' out today. I was so sick and tired of these little bitty seedlings that I am just sticking htem in the ground without regard to their height, width, size, color, or shape....or even if they are an annual or perennial! I just don't care anymore! On the other hand -- I will look for 'Gardener's World 'cause it's really nice!

Susannah, If I were a butterfly, I'd hang out at your place, too.

Gus, Hi Hoosier! That mini rose is an especially nice color! Good to know we can grow pretty roses here.

With regard to the eremurus -- 6" DEEP???!!! Um, I don't know about that. I bought a dozen Eremurus from B&B about 5 years ago. What I received were giant starfish-like tubers and I was stymied on how to plant them. I ended up planting 3, and leaving the rest on the top of the ground where I promptly forgot about them. Those 9 from on top of the ground were the only ones that lived! I've been telling people to put them on top of the ground and sift some soil over top and then sprinkle mulch over top....yes, they are hardy, at least the ones I got from Ken the Idaho cut flower farmer. They are also a nice height. I don't really care for the 8 foot tall varieites. They'll bloom this week and I'll take a photo.

With regard to whether they must have full sun...yes and no. I grow them and they bloom but they aren't increasing much. I don't have any full sun. Ispent $500.00 to have my neighbor's tree that is over hanging my garden trimmed back. At the same time, I lifted the eremurus under there to move it up after I changed the grade of the garden. It didn't bloom this year. Was it because of too much shade last year? Or because I dug it to move it? I can't tell you.

Here is a shot of Martagon Lily 'Claude Shride'. It is usually a deep maroon, but this pic has the sun coming through it.

Oh what a pretty shot. That's gorgeous.

Suzy, you should post your picture of your Martagon over on the lily forum.. :)

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

That's the most outstanding looking martagon I have ever seen!!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks, ladies. It's probably a better picture than it is in reality (but I bet it it would look good with Susan's Lychnis). Here's the picture of it without it being backlit. 'Manhatten' in front, martagon 'Backhouse' is the orangey one, and the rear is the 'Claude Shride'.

gorgeous martagon! I bought a B& B martagon I think 4 years ago and it has never bloomed. I finally moved it last fall and it looks much better - maybe this will be my year. Love the martagons.
