Hi Mark!

Definitely a butterfly! You can tell by the antennas. It looks similar to what we get here called Sulpher Butterflies. It's a beaut! See .... now you are going to have to start looking for them and posting their mug shots here! :-) I would love to see some of the butterflies you get in the U.K.!

How's the garden? Have you had any visitors come by to see it yet? You know I want to see some more photos once it's all set up and blooming! Please!!! :-D

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Hi Becky

Oooooooooooo and heres me believing it was gonna be a moth........ Pleased you know what you are talking about!!!
If i come across some other ones i will post the photos i take for you........

The garden is coming along wonderfully.......... Have a chap from blooms of bressingham coming over at the end of the moth to have a look....... but crocosmia season doesnt really start until July - August!!
Don't worry, i will send you photos........... PROMISE!!!!!!!!!

Edinburg, TX

Although it does look like a sulphur they don't sit with their antenna behind their heads like moths...and it's got tufts of fluff behind the head more like a moth...got more photos? We need to ID this bugger :o)

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Nooooooo its the only one i got.......... it sat there just long enough to let me take the one pic, then flew off.....

I will see if i can blow it up anymore......

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

this is as far as i can blow it up........

To me it still looks like a moth, but hey, i am no expert.......... Have never seen one like it here before....

Deb

Thank you for the link.........

But i dont think that is my little critter.........!!

Mark,

Am still leaning towards moth based on the way it sits, the antenna, the fuzzy fluff and the wing shape...but heck, I can't ID most of the moths from the USA much less those in the UK :o)

...and you must admit...the UK has the market on moth books. Ya'll started the ball rolling decades before any US leps got on the bandwagon.

~ Cat

Edinburg, TX

WOW Fly...sure looks like that to me. Good call!!! Whatcha think Mark?

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH ROX................ you are a clever girl!!!!!! Thank You
Thats the one...........
Isn't he a cutie.
We don't normally get them this far up North......... they are widespread down south apparently. But with global warming i guess we are getting more and more new things round here now.

Cat
I didn't know we have the market on moth books......... I have never seen one!! But then i guess i have never looked for one.
I just love the way you guys say Y'All......... always makes me smile......... Love it.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Hehe! WTG Roxie!;-d

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Y'all are soooo right about Mark's flying critter. When I first looked at the photo, I didn't see the fluffy tuffed head. If I had looked closer, I would not have been so quick to say butterfly. Way to go Rox!!!! Y'all are becoming experts out in the field! Cat - You are gonna have to apply for a job in the field to use your expertise! :-)

Added to say:

Mark - It's a beaut! Glad you are getting some of the "southern" butterflies! You may have lots of visitors this year! :-)

BTW - This photo I believe is the Pacino Sunflowers now blooming. I believe those seeds came from you! :-) :-) :-)

heh heh...my CPA is from UK...love his accent...and all those bloody bad words he uses!!! Too funny!!!

Yeppers, ya'll have the market on moth books...it was the English who started the research/collecting. All the antiquarian books are from the UK. Of course, way back then there were no nice color photographs...just lots of volumous text and maybe a few black and white plates. I had several moth books but haven't found one that I am truly pleased with. I'm femal - which equals to "I don't want lengthy taxonomy...I want color...lots and lots of big color photographs!"

A few books are coming on the market but considering the gazillions of moths in the world...there'll never be one to cover everything :o)

Mark,

We haven't met, but I just noticed your image....

We do not have one in the BugFiles as of yet. I created the entry, and all you have to do is follow the link and go add the picture. It will be a great help for those in the future.

http://davesgarden.com/bf/go/4681/

As of now, the zip-code report won't be necessary, because it only works within the US, but Dave is pondering ways to make BugFiles global.

Thanks so much in advance.

(by the way, If y'all can add pictures and reports of any of your critters, it would be much appreciated...if you don't know how, D-mail me and I'll be more than happy to help)

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

Haha!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Oh...... I see how it is ...... Rox is the good seed and I'm the bad seed, huh? Then ya better leave one eye open while your trying to sleep at night! You know how those bad seeds can be! They are known for weeding out the good seeds! LOL!

Mark - Ya got that Texan drawl down real good ya young cowpoke you! :-)

BTW - I wonder if your red butt bee can beat the color of the red butt spider that Cat took a photo of. Now that is RED!!!

Mr_Crocosmia
I am afraid this identification is wrong! It is the Brimstone Moth, but the European moth of that name, which is Opisthograptis luteolata in the family Geometridae: http://ukmoths.org.uk/show.php?bf=1906

The American Brimstone Moth (Azenia obtusa), is very similar in
appearance: http://bugguide.net/node/view/71896/bgimage
but is not even in the same family, being one of the Noctuidae.

I had to search through my English Moth Book to find it as I didi not feel it looked quite right for Azenia obtusa.

If you agree, I will make an entry for the Brimstone Moth and transfer your image to it,

Kennedy

Edinburg, TX

Ya'll are too funny! So many weeds and bad seeds...guess that's what makes this forum a hoot!

Becky, dad gummit...ya beat me to the red butt spider link...after reading Mark's post I was going to mention that big bad bugger.

Mark...if the red butt bee is sitting how will we see it's red hiny? :o)

A CPA is a certified public accountant...the bloke who does my income tax each year. He makes sure my hard earned federal dollars come back to me at the end of the year :o)

As for the moth books...I'm sticking to the ones geared to moths of North America...but seems when I'm browsing amazon or ebay several pop up for the UK.

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

OOPS!

Sorry...

Sounds like I need to get geared up and find it's American Counterpart....

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Uh, Melody .... I wouldn't feel too bad ...... heck! I thought it was a butterfly! LOL! At least you knew it was a moth. LOL!

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

.
We got the right Moth photo............. just that Melody entered it as an Azenia Obtusa..

Both the links from you Kennedyh and Fly_girl are the same....... they link to the British brimstone moth!!

Sorry, I did miss that. What mislead me was that melody created an entry for Brimstone Moth (Azenia obtusa) which was the incorrect first suggestion for your moth, and that is where you uploaded the image.

I have done some further searching, and Azenia obtusa does not seem to be called Brimstone Moth at all. The only Common Name I found for it is Obtuse Yellow, so I have changed its common name to that.

The correct place for the image is as the Brimstone Moth (Opisthograptis luteolata) and I have created a BugFiles entry for that here: http://davesgarden.com/bf/go/4682/

Can I now please move your image to the Brimstone Moth (Opisthograptis luteolata)

Ken

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Hi Ken

Yes, i never noticed what Melody had done........ she just asked me to put the photo in there as she had added the description etc.......
Oh well, no harm done.......

We all agreed it wasn't The Azenia Obtusa............ apart from anything else, that is an american moth and not British!!

Yep, you can move the image to the Brimstone Moth file..........

Mark

Churchill, Victoria, Australia(Zone 10a)

Thanks Mark, your image is now here: http://davesgarden.com/bf/go/4682/

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

You are welcome........... thanks for doin that!!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

One more for the books! Thanks for watching Ken! You are doing such a great job with the BugFiles, I really appreciate accuracy.

:-D

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Me too...

It isn't the first time he's had to fix something I've done to the bugs.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

You do very fine work too Melody. Thank you for all you do here.

We truely appreciate you!

:-Deb

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Thanks Deb!

Everybody messes up sometime...I just figure that you gotta stick your neck out and do stuff. Most of the time I'm right...and DG's a little better...thank goodness for folks like Ken who have the expertise to identify a mistake and correct it.

That's a hint to everyone here....don't be afraid to contribute to BugFiles and PlantFiles...

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

I think you do a great job too Melody, even though this is our first meeting!!!
