What is in this?

What hatches out of these? Looks like a bunch of sticks stuck together. Sorry the picture isn't great, the wind was blowing. It was on my purple porterweed. Actually, there are 2, maybe more. I also see them on my chain-link fence sometimes.

Lucy - That is a moth cocoon! Way cool!!! I would love to see a better photo if you can get one! Love it!!! I don't see many of those in my yard. Do show us another photo, please! :-)

Can't quite tell but it looks like some type of bag moth cocoon.

I'll get another or 2. I have an old one from last year on the fence. It looks like something put a hole in it. I'll take a picture of that one also.

Thank you all. I agree on bag worm. : )

BlueGlancer - LOL at the wave!!! Yes, it does resemble something a bagworm would do. Now you have to keep an eye on it and see if you can catch a photo of it when it emerges! They do have a really cool cocoon! I haven't seen one of those in years! Brings back memories as a child when I would go out into the woods scouting around. :-)

Yep, I remember those from childhood, also. We use to watch the little worm crawl part way out, and drag his little house with him. : )

So true...haven't seen a bag moth cocoon in ages.

Funny wave!!!
