Could i have seen what i think i saw?

Ridgefield, WA

The past few mornings, i've been seeing (and hearing) what i believe to be a stellar's jay on the roof of the house. This sort of cacophonous rumble would attract me to the window, and there i'd see this bird all blue and cocky and flying off.

This morning, as the bird flew down from the roof and onto the ground, i noticed it had something in its mouth. I would swear it was a hornets nets! It looked sort of spherical, like the vacant nests i've seen in the grass recently which i assumed had sloughed off naturally in the wind. The bird was pecking at this whatever it was, clearly enjoying a feast.

Could this blue bird be snatching the wasp nests from the eaves and eating the contents? If so, way to go little blue!

Hi estreya, Did he have a crested head? Were the head feathers a darker color than the other blue on most of his body?

They do eat alot of insects. Heres more info.

Oh yes, pelletory, i'm almost certain that's him! Or her, as the case may be. And that's surely the call i've been hearing.

Bird or not, ya gotta be pretty hungry to eat wasps.

This quote is from that site:

"Despite its affinity for picnics, this jay's diet mainly consists of wasps, beetles, grasshoppers, along with fruits of the oak, elderberry and cherry."

Wow. I just think that's so amazing! I love that they're clearing these nests! I was wondering how i was going to get them down ....
