Carnosa question ( I can see you all yawning )

Medford, NJ

I have two carnosas from different sources....one has never bloomed and the new growth on it is always a rusty brown color. I am wondering if it is really a carnosa - do different types of this variety have totally different colors on new growth?

I also want to add that the leaves on the above mentioned plant are much thinner and longer than my other carnosa, which has rounded wider leaves...I also have motoskei, and I know that the carnosa with the rounded leaves is not that one.

nevermind, I just did some looking around and found that some carnosas do have the reddish brown color on new growth

Is your H. motoskei getting ready to bloom?

No it is not. I am sure yours is, though. Too bad we can't ALL have ALL of our hoyas blooming ALL of the time like SOME people around here..... :)

My poor little motoskei got off to a rough start, two older growth cuttings that are growing sooooo slowly, they average
about one leaf every 6 months. Once it even got started on an honest-to-goodness vine, but it shriveled up and died before it went anywhere. ( sigh )

Looks healthy, just taking a long time to get started!

Bhavana...are you growing it coolish and letting it get dry before watering??? Less light than others, too. Mine seems to like that treatment... My small plants (some) are starting to bloom, but the bigger plant is slower.

I let all my hoyas get dry before watering, whether they like it or not. They all get the same temps, I really have no choice with that. Light is the only thing that differs, I live in an area with so many trees, very little direct sun makes it into my windows so the hoyas get lower light than they prefer, some in bright windows, some lower light depending on exposure, and I also have some artificial lighting for them. It is not easy having hoyas under these conditions, and especially hard considering the last place I lived was so bright you needed sunglasses indoors some days! I had so many flowers blooming at all times, the place smelled like a funeral palor at night.

But now, most seem fine with the lower light. I think this motoskei, which I have only had for about a year, and I mentioned came from older growth, is just taking a while to get moving under the circumstances. Alot of my hoyas are really going thru the springtime spurt right now, I am hoping this one will join in! I suppose pretty much being a carnosa, the lower light is ok for motoskei. But, like I said, I would be hard pressed to find a spot in my house that is NOT low light!
