Shipova tree - has anyone here managed to get a harvest?

Brooklyn, NY

Hi - I am new to this forum - I have a dwarf 3 year old Shipova tree - It is a pretty little thing and doing quite well. I was hoping someone could tell me ( from experience hopefully!) what the fruit tastes like. Can you bake with it? Does the fruit REALLY smell like roses? How old does the tree have to get before it starts to bear fruit? As you can see I have many questions !!!
Any advice would be appreciated.

If you have the Yugoslavian version, you will need a pollenizer. late pear like Bosc is recommended.

I got it from One Green World - am not sure if it originally hails from Yugoslavia or not.
It has not blossomed yet - but you think a pear might eventually be needed? Thanks for the info!

I asked because there two versions called Shipova. One is a cross between a common pear and other fruits in the pear family. it si also referred to as the Bollwyller Pear. Apparently there are several cultivars of this one. Originated in France.

The other is a cross between a pear and mountain ash (Sorbus aucuparia). This was created in Yugoslavia. This is the one sold by Raintree Nurserys.

Don't want to discourage you, but these two articles may shed some light. Both refer to the Yugoslavian type.

Thanks! I had read Lee Reich's book ( it was one of the reasons I ordered the tree) - I promise I will not get discouraged! I love the tree for itself - it is so pretty and dainty with soft colored grayish leaves - if I never get any fruit I will just classify it as an ornamental little tree - I ordered a Russian Quince and a Dwarf Moorpark Apricot as well as a Laturulla Fig - so I should at least get one piece of fruit before it is all over! ( If not -I guess I will have to slink in shame to my farmer's market) Thank you so much for the articles - I love reading up on things - if you have any other articles you like - you will always find me an appreciative audience!
