Hi folks, an interesting butterfly visited my garden,
they are tricky to get to pose...
enjoying the discussion and images.
thanks.

Do you have a photo of the wings? Looks a little like the Monarch Butterfly. The black with white spots on the body.
Oops..... we were posting at the same time.
Changed to correct the butterfly name.

bloomoon - I'd love to see a photo of the top of the wings. I still don't know for sure.
I corrected in above post about what I thought it might be. It looks like a Monarch or Queen body. But unless I see the top of the wings, I am not sure. Very pretty whatever it is. What plant did you notice it landing on? Sometimes that is helpful in IDing.

Arte,
How about checking this site for ID. You have so many lovelies that don't get to visit us! :)

Well..... how dumb of me!!! I didn't even realize that arte is in Sydney, Australia. No wonder I couldn't figure out what species of butterfly it is! LOL!!!
Sorry, Arte! :-}
You just want to help Becky....it's a lovely trait!

Heh heh...yeah, I was browsing my books on butterflies of the world this morning but had to leave for the ranch. Never did get around to ID'ing it either. I also tried to google for Australia's buttterflies but also a tad too time consuming.
By the white markings on the body I thought perhaps something from the danaus family...and then again the wing design looks like something from the tailless papilio family...oh heck, I just haven't made the time to figure it out.
Perhaps someone more experience with butterflies from that part of the world will pop in and ID it for all of us :o)

oh how beautiful
I think I finally got this one figured out. My first hunch was the clincher...it's in the danaus (danainae) family :o)
Common Australian Crow - euploea core corinna

Scroll down to the third set of photos...shows several together and shows the underside of the wings. They also seem to roost together. Way cool!!! Oh, and the caterpillars are equally cute too!
Bloo...that Brisbane butterfly site is a good one.

Cat - I think you nailed the ID on that butterfly! Way to go!!!! You are fast becoming one of our resident experts! :-)
Arte, that first pic is amazing!
They are pretty and the cats are sooo cute!
wow, hey thanks everyone for looking into this one!
I am always interested in the i.d of things that pass through my garden.
And i am really pleased Texas~Cat placed a name to it. Thanks!
this forum has such friendly folks!
if i get any other flutterbys visit, i will try to get some pics to share.
great effort too, Becky!
many thanks friends.
arte in Oz,
and a pic of my small courtyard garden.
small but full of diversity and life.
i love it!

A lovely courtyard garden Arte :o)
Please continue to share your butterfly and moth photos with us. I, for one, don't get to see what's clear across the other side of the world. Heck, from where I live it takes me a good 10 to 12 hour drive just to get out of Texas!!! :o)
Well, okay...from where I work I could walk about 100 yards and be in Mexico :o)

What a pretty butterfly bloomoon! You guys have lots of great butterflies in AU. (Nice going Cat!) Don't you just love the cats too with that extra pair of filaments.. 4 pairs.
bloomoon isn't it coming onto winter there now? How cold is it?
Deb
Hi folks, tjhanks everyone for your friendly contact!
Texas, i was unaware Moths were of interest!
but, i'll keep an eye out, they are a bit plain...brown..
Deb, yes..it has just gone into Winter.
The temps are really quite mild and nice.
the days are warm an sunny, tops of around 20 -24 degrees C
( i'm not sure what that is in F..)
and the nights are cold..down to 8 at prez..
but often a bit higher.
we don't get any frosts here.
It's a great climate for many plants, but, anything Tropical, or really cold loving,
will struggle..like i'd like to try Trilliums, but its not cold enough!
The down side is the rain is getting less reliable, and we are not allowed to use tap water
on the garden, or anywhere outside the house really.
Australia is getting hotter and drier..sigh..it was bloody hot an dry enough!
anyhow, good mulching, and capturing the rain in buckets...helps.
plus, i grow mainly..bulbous, rhizome and corms, which store water i believe.
ok..that's it for now.
thanks everyone. nice to have met you all.
arte.
i love mushrooms too!
