My container pond

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Here's my little pond in a pot. It's only about 2 feet deep and a 16" across. No pumps or filters.
I wanted a water garden so bad, but didn't want to attract snakes or provide too much breeding area for mosquitos, so..this is the result, which I started last last summer.
All the plants in it survived right where it is over the winter (except the umbrella palm that I just got a few months ago).
Now that the sting algae had subsided, I'm hoping for iris and waterlily blooms soon!

Anyone else have a potted pond?

Very pretty!

Very nice water garden!

I used to have one in a half wine barrel I lined with pond liner several years ago. I gave a raccoon a really nice fresh fish dinner one Christmas day and lost the heart to keep it going (That raccoon shredded everything. There were parts and plants strewn all over)

I've been thinking about doing another one this year, though. I really enjoyed the sound of the water. I got a new plastic pot from Costco that I haven't drilled yet that I've been thinking might work-but no fish this time!!

Susybell: The raccoon raid would've taken the wind out of my sails, too. I've never put any fish in my little pond, although I did see the odd frog last year.

I have one, with tropical lily (and some misquito fish).

Oooh, Dale! Very pretty. Your lilies are way ahead of mine...but I'm very optimistic.
Do you have a pic of the whole thing? (Just curiosity.) :)

Deb, I live in palm tree country and those are tropical lillies, evergreen and the have 1-3 blooms every week of the year. I will take a photo of the container tomorrow after the tropical storm has passed.

Very pretty pics! I just saw a container pond in a magazine today......I had never seen this done before. I would love to give it a try!

Deb, I love your water garden, just the right amount of everything. How long have you had it planted this spring?

I have one too, but it hasn't been warm enough yet for it to do much. This is from last year.

Aren't all built water features 'container ponds'?

It is just a matter of size.

Deb, the raccoons destroyed a water feature several times for me but since we got a dog they still come around but have not done any more damage. I now have a large pot of lotus on my deck and they haven't touched it. I hope to see blooms soon and will post pictures when it does flower. I do keep a couple of feeder goldfish in there to keep the mosquitoes down and to fertilize the lotus. My dog and a stray cat that has adoped us sit around the pot and stare at the fish, it is pretty cute. We see few snakes around here so that does not bother me. But raccoons, grrrrrrrrrr.

Not just a difference in size. Just because a large pond is "contained" doesn't make it a container pond. I'd use the definition "in an out-of-ground container" as a definition of container water garden. Sort of the difference between an above ground pool and an in-ground pool, not the same. ;-)

Dale: Are those ponds in your garden? Very nice! I guess I was thinking it's diff. because mine's in a self-contained pot, above-ground (like Revclaus says) and it has no pump or filters and is relatively small. ..and no wildlife other than what shows up on its own. Only now I'm thinking a couple of little goldfish might be nice. I do put mosquito dunks in it.

Rev: I like your pond; it's very similar to mine but so full of life! The parrot feather and lily overwintered in mine, along with the iris. The lily died back to a tiny underwater nub, but came back and has really started to put out nice leaves over the past couple of weeks. The iris have grown about 8" in the same time. The parrot feather never died back, in fact, I had to thin it out! I'm hoping in a month or so, it'll all be nice and full...and in bloom.

Ardesia: Looking forward to seeing your lotus!

Howdy Rev! I would love for my container water garden to look like yours. Mine is a 6 gal container. My pets think it is their personal water trough. Diameter wise, yours and DebSC don't look much bigger than mine, but seem a lot deeper. That must make a diff.

I have a noid water lily, curly rush and a round leaved plant that I can't recall right now. None are exactly thriving. I am considering buying a mini hardy water lily from the upcoming WL coop to see if that helps.

Hi Vossner! The picture was taken in late July, so it was at its best then. This year's garden is very different. I bought a hardy dward lily and it was set right away in April -- too early for me. So they sent me another one at the proper time. However, I had kept that earlier one alive in a mixing bowl and water. So they're both in the pot now. That kinds of limits what else I can put in there. Apart from the water liles, I have aquatic forget me not, dwarf cattails, lizard's tail and parrot's feathers. They're all new this year, but I'm hoping they'll make it through our winter.
