Hummers: Anybody worried about empty calories?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Hi all,

I have so much work to do here, but it is so hot and dry I don't seem to be motivated to do anything but watch the hummers. I have a lot of nectar plants growing here, but they are drawn to my new-this-year feeder.

Is sugar water good for them? Wouldn't flower nectar have more vitamins and minerals that would be healthier for them? Somehow this seems so unnatural.

They feed mainly on flowers. The white sugar and water mix is fine for them. They also get a lot of protein from eating bugs.

This is kind of an interesting article from Hilton Pond on hummingbird nutrition...maybe too much information! http://www.hiltonpond.org/ThisWeek040808.html

It's hot and dry here too. Have had much fun watching the hummers and I go out and play with the water hose with them to keep me (and them) cool!

T - Sounds like fun playing in the sprinklers with the hummers! Too cute! One of these days I will be sharing my hummer stories and photos! :-) :-) :-)
