wireless and laptop question

I need some guidance. I have two laptops - no desktop computers. I am currently on dial up and am going up in the world to high speed wireless. Now the problem. While setting things up they say to plug in the ethernet cord to the control box (got that) and then into the computer tower. Well, I have no tower. I tried just not plugging the ethernet cord in and got nothing. What do I do? I am so frustrated. Could anyone lend a hand here???
