I'm posting this here, because it is a tropical tree, but I will probably post in the propagation forum as well, depending on what kind of responses I get. I have some seed pods from a gorgeous pink - yes pink poinciana that I want to try to grow. The last time I did this, I opened the pods, set them in boiling water, and let them sit overnight. Does anyone know of a better way - or something else I should do? With our heat and rain, I generally just put the seeds outside in a fairly protected area until they look big enough to handle the sun....again, any better suggestions? I REALLY want these to grow - so any and all help will be welcome.

Do you have a name on this color, it is not in plant piles. Is it Delonix? They don't always set fertile seed, is the pink one you have tired before?

Caesalpinia? Plant the seed in good soil, in a pot outside in some shade, water when dry. Plant out when it is 6" tall. They are one step above weeds. I have them coming up all of the place (the seed pod 'explodes' and scatters the seed when completely dry). Pick the pods when the are brown, crack them open, let the seed dry in the house, in the shade for 2 weeks and plant.
We have a weed out here that looks similar to Caesalpinia, but as it gets taller (some are out on the lagoon wall), it is obviously different. The flowers are brownish puffballs, not pretty at all. The seed pods look very much the same though. Are you sure the "weeds" you see are this same bush?

Dale, your pictures remind me of my days as a teenager. I worked at a corner flower stand, and every once in a while the owner would take me with him on a buying trip up through the flower growers just west of the Escondido area in California. Flowers as far as the eye could see....it was like the "poppy field scene" in the Wizard of Oz, but with hundreds of different types of flowers. That's probably what started me on my gardening craze in the first place.
I love to go out to the wholesalers and spend other people's money.
If you shoot the photo in a certain way it is hard to tell that the plants are in containers. Can you imagine how much it would cost to plant a bed this size in 4"?
You are soOOO lucky to be able to spend your time surrounded by such beauty! Pity the poor folks who work in a cubicle, in a room, in a building, in a cement canyon, surrounded by freeways! UGH! You've got a tough job Dale - but I guess SOMEBODY has to do it!

Yep, its a firecracker flower....one of my hubby's favorite flowers in our garden. He always goes out to check on it, to see how many new flowers it has each day. Dale - what is your secret????? How do you get such gorgeous full displays out of what are tiny and thin in my yard??? Please tell! My babies want to grow up big and strong like your beauties!
One of my sales tools and one of my gardening supplies are the same, bull sh*t.
I use lots of time release fertilizer in the containers I take care of. If the pkg says 1 T I use 1/2cup.
And you don't burn them??? I am constantly flabbergasted by your glorious plants....so I will seriously consider your suggestion. Fertilizer or plant food. It is very difficult for me to get fertilizer. And I do everything in pots....so you think I should order some b**l s**t???
Time release, brand name Osmocote (I use a generic verison, cheaper). Works for me. I am a mainlander, we have lots of supplies here.

If you have access to aged manure (old, been laying around for awhile) use it liberally.
The best manure has been pushed into a pile, covered with a waterproof tarp and left alone for 4-6 months. That usually gets rid of the pathogens (weed seed, etc). If it is fresh it stinks, draws pests and is full of weed seeds. We get composted manure for $1,20 a bag, about a cubic foot. I put it down 6" deep when I can. Keeps the weeds to a minimum, retains moisture, feeds the plants and makes the earthworm population explode.
If you have to use concentrated (chemical) fertilizer, then you should apply it and cover it with some kind of mulch. That will decimate the earthworms, but, improve plant growth.
Worms are natures best tillers of the soil. Up and down thru the soil, making tunnels that air, water and nutrients flow. That is how gardening was designed to work on the planet.
Carol, you are just too kind! Not just yet though.....maybe with my Hoya order. So, since I only garden in pots, the worm benificence doesn't do me a whole lot of good. And I don't quite get the difference between the liquid plant food and the Osmocote stuff, other than the time release....which would be better for pots?
Osmocote is expensive, the blue stuff is for people who can mix it up and use it without forgetting. I have my best luck with osmocote, cause I am busy most of the day.
Well, we have a time release copycat out here - but I seem to have better luck with the MG copycat....but once again you have blown me away with your gorgeous pics. Guess I should start using 1/2 c of osmocote!
