Awesome photos, Iris! What's the pretty purple vine next to the feeder? Clematis or Columbine?

Edinburg, TX

Wow...so tiny compared to that feeder!

It's a girl! A female ruby-throated hummingbird. Maybe she has a nest nearby. Great pic!

Thanks everyone! I have two that keep coming by, Sometimes they fight but it doesn't last long. This particular one tries hiding behind the feeder/ or vine when I try to get a picture, It seems to know exactly what angle to be it for me to have a hard time snapping a photo!

Beckygardener, Thats a clematis vine. (The President )

Birdiegirl, Thanks for the up-date, I really don't know how to tell the boys from the girls with these little flying jewels.

Hi all! I'm just checking out this forum for the first time.

Here's a picture that I got by my columbine a few weeks ago. After about 20 tries and 50 mosquito bites, I got ONE picture that is pretty neat!

Rose1656, Costly and time consuming ( 20 tries and 50 mosquito bites) But you 'did' get your nice pic! :)

Beautiful shot of the red throat!!

Wow Rose, that ruby throat of his almost looks like an extension of the flower. Great pic.

Rose - Your "President" Clematis vine is gorgeous! Don't think I can grow them here! Great photos of your little hummers! Definitely a Ruby Throat hummer as is recognized by that bright red neck!!! Enjoy, enjoy!!! Lucky you!

Rose, Iris (great flower names!)...here's my pic of a young hummer that came was with it's mom and us last summer.

Iris...what type of columbine?

They love my annual blue/black salvia, penstemons and cardinal vine. I don't have great luck with columbines.

Birdie Girl

Iris has the beautiful clematis. I have the columbine. It's just the type that grows wild in the woods around us. I'm not sure what it's called, but gets red flowers on it early in the spring. I've never been able to get clematis to grow very well in this sandy soil that we have, but I keep trying!

Deb, Thanks! Nice to see you too!

Birdiegirl, Nice picture, I have the B&B salvia for the first time this year, I heard the hummingbirds really like that one ( Mine are just starting to grow there buds for bloom now) I also have cardinal flower which I know they love ( Thats not grown enough for them yet either) I tried the cardinal vine here, But, Mine didn't make it ( Maybe I'll try another) I know they also love trumpet vine.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Iris - Be careful of the trumpet vine *IF* you are talking about Trumpet Creeper (Campsis radicans) as seen here on DG:
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/644/index.html

The roots of this vine are very, very aggressive! Don't plant anywhere near your house or anywhere else you don't want it to take over permanently! Plant with caution!!! I'm speaking from experience!!!!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I hear you Becky... My neighbor next door has one visible over the fence, and I'm quite happy to admire it from a close distance, LOL! :-D Anything attracted to her vines comes here too, ((Big grin)).

beckygardener, Thankyou for the up-date! Much appreciated!

I have a trumpet vine - mine is next to the fence in a pot; it dies back in winter here. I love this vine, but I know I have to watch for seeds pods, and I wouldn't put it directly into the ground.

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

I had a few trumpet vines back North, They never got out of hand there, But, Here, It's a lot warmer and I'm sure it would be a different story.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9b)

Iris, I think I'm ok here - glad to hear that you had one and it was well-behaved. My in-laws (here in OR) had one that grew up the back of their old house (two stories) and died back every winter. It never spread beyond the one plant, so I felt okay about putting one in... but it's always good to hear someone else had a good story about this bugger!
