OT - DGers in FL - Passiflora Maypop?

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

I know this is the Plumeria forum but thought I'd see if I could "beg" here...might post in the FL forum as well. Do any of you have access to some Passiflora 'Maypop' http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/1189/index.html I'm told it grows wild down there. I would be thrilled if one of you might be able to send me some for postage. Matter-a-fact while I'm asking, if anyone has access to 'Incense' http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/54070/ my vine wants would be complete...these too appear on all searches to be hardy to my area. Thank you, in advace for tolerating my request. :)

How does this plant perform in zone10? Is it a true vine? Is it self clinbing?
Thanks
Davie

Davie, it is extemely invasive and aggressive vine in Zone 10 as many passifloras are. Passiflora 'Belotti' is a much more behaved vine with a great fragrance. Chantell and I talked about this earlier in a dmail.

Hey Davie,
I'm just learning about these...apparently they're quite robust in the right conditions!! There are quite a few varieties of these...many, esp some of the prettiest, are only hardy in the much warmer zones. There are only a handful of them that are hardy to my zone.

Thanks for the info.
Clare what do you mean by invasive? Are they like snail vines, or even more vigorous? Are they self climbing? Is the Belotti as nice of a flower as the pictures above?
Thanks,
Davie

By invasive, I mean that the vines shoot out in all directions, hook on to things, and climb and cover anything and everything in its way. I think all passifloras have the tendrils which hook, circle, and climb so, yes, self-climbing. Furthermore, it will send out runners underground and spontaneous vines will pop up everywhere in the garden. No doubt it has escaped cultivation in Florida and become wild, as Chantell said, and is probably on the invasive species lists of Florida and Hawaii. Some passiflora hybrids are more well-behaved. I used to have about a dozen passifloras, most of them grown in containers, but I have since rid myself of them due to space limitations. I don't know anything about snail vines so I can't compare them to Passifloras. This is 'Belotti' below.

Does anyone know where to get these vines?

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Davie,
Logees has a good selection of Passifloras in general http://www.logees.com/products.asp?dept=177&pagenumber=2&sort_on=title&sort_by=

As for the 'Belotti' - you can look into the sites listed - http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Passiflora+%27Belotti%27&btnG=Google+Search

Thanks Chantell!

My Home Depot and Target have these too.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Clare - must be nice!!! LOL BTW - what do they cost out there and what size? Promise I'm not asking for any - just wondering what they run. :)

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Gosh, it has been a while since I've gone to Home Depot and priced plants. I think the one-gallon passifloras that they sell are somewhere between $4.99-$9.99, and the five-gallon ones are around $19.99-$25, something like that. They have 'Belotti,' 'Incense,' P. alata, P. edulis, P. vitifolia, and some others that I can't remember now. I've been doing my best to stay away from nuseries as I am completely out of room;-).

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

THAT is SO not fair *pouting* - the only place that was getting them in quoted a price of $20ish for 3 qt container....UGH!!! Thank goodness for dear DG friends sharing their plants - that's all I've got to say...for now...LOL

I have a few different colors of this if you want A vine and no babies you plant it in a good size pot let it do its thing. When it is well situated you cut the bottom only of the pot and sink it in the ground 8 inches or so and no spreading! I have seen the horrors of one planted in the ground left alone and there everywhere very hard to keep up with every week event.

Thank you for the offer. After everyones comments, andsome things I have read on my own, I don't think this is something I want to mess with.

i foolishly took some cuttings from roadside maypops and planted them. yikes. i will spend the rest of my days pulling them out. i had one little spot next to the house and there is a concrete curb between them and the next flower bed. i don't know how they did it because they didn't flower before they died down for the winter, but this spring, they are in the next bed.

LOL well hopefully with my zone being a "tad" colder it will be controlled a tad more.

I have a passion vine I received in a trade about five years ago. It has the very purple flowers. I thought I had pictures of it, but cant find one now. In the first year we made a trellis for it on the side of the yard. It covered the trellis and also my neighbor's chain link fence. I thought it looked beautiful. The butterflies also loved the vines. The fragrance was awesome. My neighbor had her son come and cut it off her fence because she is afraid of butterflies. In clearing the vines off her fence, he also destroyed my vines. In two weeks they were dead. But they sure are invasive. They have come back every spring, all over our yard. Her yard too!!! They get mowed down with the grass. Right now I have them growing up and over the pool screen enclosure. We let them grow and bloom and only pull them down when the butterflies have finished eating all the leaves off the vines. My daughter has taken a few young plants and has them growing along her fence.

I found a half dead Lavendar Lady on sale for $1.00 in the grocery store once. I knew it would come back to life and it did - all over the garden. But it is in an area that gets no irrigation and it still thrives so I let it live and enjoy the butterflies.

I also found what I think is a coccinea at the same time for the same price. This one is not weedy at all but the vines are really long, this one travels.

I have been trying to find some to grow indoors in my atrium. The only one I have found in a nursery was in a 2 gallon pot and they wanted $49.99 for it! I have a wall that gets sunshine most of the day... about 8 ft wide and 12 ft high.. I was thinking it could be container grown in there .. anyone have some they care to share? I am not picky.. just want the flowers in there. Here is a pic of the atrium.. not a clean at the moment and I am putting another trellis at the end. It has two large skylights and the top goes to the height of the roof of the house.

Lhasa;
May I suggest Bengal Clock Vine for your atrium? It would be much better specimen, what's more it will bloom from autumn straight on to spring, while everything is dormant outdoors. Yes! If I'd room that's what I would do. And the big blue trumpet-like flowers. Who could resist? LOL, btw, I can't spare mine. Logee got some!!!!!!!!!!!
