Can anyone help with some questions regarding moths?

I started a thread regarding a visitor in my garden today over on the Northest Gardening forum. As the conversation has gone on, I realize we need a "specialist" to help answer some of my foolish questions *lol*

Could one of you take a look and possibly give me some answers? I have searched the net but maybe the questions I have are too basic even for Google to answer *lol*
