What do you all think - are the disfigured leaves caused by soil problems or insects? This is the first time I've ever grown one of these.
Thanks!

soil or insect problem?
I would like to know that, too. I will be watching.
To me it looks like a chewing insect got to the leaves when they were very immature. The edges, once rough from being chewed have healed over and smoothed over as they have grown and matured. I see this type of smoothing when I leave a leaf that has been chewed by "a small green caterpillar" alone. After a period of time the edges of the hole look like the edges of your leaves.
