Is this begonia big enough to take a leaf cutting? The largest leaves are about 3 1/2 inches across. And is a leaf cutting the best way to propagate it?
This is the first rex I've ever owned, and I know nothing about them. Thanks for your help.
Big enough to propagate?
Yes, that is big enough to prop from. Take the oldest leaves from the bottom first.
Water rooting has proven very quick for me. I took 'Pink Diamonds' and put 4 leaves in water, 4 in Perlite, and 8 in different areas of a 120 gallon tank. The 4 in water had rooted in a week and I potted them up. Two of four in Perlite rotted, the other two finally rooted. The 8 in the tank had varying degrees of success. The ones in the middle for the most part were slow or dried up. The ones on the edge started to rot. The ones between the wet edges and dry middle rooted and formed new plants.
i see another project for me!!!
Thanks for the info hcmdole
Missy, you should pot that baby up to a 6 inch. I have had the best luck with a very light and 'gritty' potting soil.
HC McDole, I have not had much luck with rooting Rex in soil. I am going to try your way. I really love Rex and the ones I like the best seem to be all too rare.
GG, Your spooking me out, you are everywhere.
me everwhere??????? You put me to shame with your traveling over DG!
Yes, you do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! do you know what kind of begonia that one is???? never seen anything that big in Texas in the way of a cane begonia!!!!!!

That begonia that missy99912 posted is NEW YORK SWIRL. From the Great American Cities Line from Booman Floral. And yes it gets HUGE!!! I really like this begonia. Attached if a picture that I took @ the San Diego fair a few years ago, when this begonia won an AWARD.
And you shouldn't propagate, because is a PATENTED rex begonia, but if it's for your personal use and enjoyment, I don't think shouldn't be a problem :-) And yes, it's big enough for propagation.
