My first Green Zinnia

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I planted so many Zinnia seeds this year because we put in a new garden. This is the first of the Green ones blooming. I LOVE the color!

OUTSTANDING! What type of zinnia is this? I believe I have the seeds. I actually planted a 72-cell flat of zinnias and never transplanted them to the flowerbed. They are long and leggy now, lost, I'm afraid. I didn't transplant because my flowerbed is shady, and I believe these need bright sun.

Please tell me where they grow best, and do I still have time to direct sow some seeds into containers I can hunch toward the sunlight. Also, how long did it take for you zinnia to bloom? We have a LOT more hot days to look forward to here in Houston.

Thanks!

Gymgirl,

I planted seeds called Enchanting Green Envy Zinnias in either late March or April that I bought from Red Bud Farms on line. I bought LOTS of other seeds from them as well. Cosmos especially. Most of their seeds have come up and some are blooming. But I expect most will bloom throughout the summer. I throw Cosmos seed down all the time because they are so fast to flower here.

I planted Zins in both full sun and part shade, as well as the Cosmos, and they are all growing and blooming. The ones planted in the sun are taller now, but wait until the real heat kicks in. I'll bet there will be no difference.

I planted ALL my seeds directly on the ground....some I just scattered....didn't even cover with dirt....just mulch, and they grew. I believe in simple.

My gosh, that's beautiful. I didn't even know there was such things as green zinnias. What a splendid, cool color. Thanks for posting this!

I planted Envy with a Purple Zinnia this year, I can't wait to see the combo. I have big buds so it should be any day now. I hope the look as good as yours.

cocao,
that was my plan. I saw those fuschia zinnias and thought they'd be a knockout with the lime green ones. I may still scatter a few seeds. They have them at Wally World.

Gymgirl, I not sure if zinnias do as well in Houston as they do here. Maybe someone in your zone can pipe in. The good news is they bloom in 6 weeks from seed, so just scatter and if they don't do well yank them out. I blame zinnias for my garden addiction, they where the first seeds I ever sowed, many, many years ago. They are so easy I now feel guilty for not growing a few every year. Good luck.
