Eastern Black Swallowtail on Buddleija "Pink Delight"

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

How do you guys get such good pics of butterflies? I have such trouble. They either fly away or they move and blur the picture. This is my best effort so far. I accomplished this by having DH take the pic! I have tons of butterflies of all kinds all over the yard.

Agree w/ you. I can NEVER get a good pic. But I had one of these yesterday, frolicking around. It was so beautiful. I don't have swarms of them but I do notice that pop. increased dramatically when I planted buddleia/butterfly bush.

crowelli, I think they secret is to get a comfy chair and just sit and shoot. Shoot often and get a lot of pics, the odds are you will get a good pic or two. I have probably taken hundreds of shots and only a few are actually shareable. lol
For those fast butterflies that don't stop, I have a sport setting on my camera, it seems to help.

Thanks. Y'all at least made me feel better about it!

I have managed to get some good photos this spring. The ones that I wish for are the dragonflies. Just not a good enough camera...

These guys were a good bit more shy. I just have no idea what kind of butterflies they are...

Beautiful flying flower you have on that beautiful Buddleija bloom! Nice.

Pod, those are GREAT pics. How do you ever manage to capture them with their wings flat open like that??? I'm impressed.

I stumbled on them with the camera open and ready. It was just an accident.

Whatever the yellow one was, there were so many I couldn't have missed. I didn't bother them in the least.

The blue/black ones were spooky and just got lucky there. I don't have lots of flowers they specifically like but they are attracted to the coneflowers this year. I certainly am not skilled at it... just got lucky. Thanks...

Very nice pod!

The dragonflies are tricky...they're so fast! When I shoot them I stick a garden stake in one of the pond plants or next to the pond. They love to patrol the area and will always land on something higher than the pond.

lol...This little guy was easy to photograph...since he/she had its body inside of a tall Mexican Petunia bloom... :)

Nice photos, guys...thanks for sharing... :)

How delightful... I have a pond ~ not a pond and I always intentionally leave tall spears of grass around it when I bushhog. That way the dragon and damsel flies have places to light. I absolutely love them... and all the winged flowers. : )

Melanie, that is a very cool photo! It looks like the butterfly is part of the flower.

I have a BST cat that is eating a Rue like crazy. I can't wait until it is a Bfly.
