Le Coop D'Etat's Inaugural Night!

Antrim, NH

Well, the girls are all bathed and in the coop for the night. The new coop is christened Le Coop D'Etat, and all the revolutionary hens are enjoying their new digs. Well, honestly, they are pretty fussy about having to move out of the old coop, but hey.

This is what the coop looks like from the outside. You can see the old coop and part of our house in the background. It is 12 x8, with the two bay window areas for roosting. More pix to follow.

Here's a side view.

I'm going to paint it a color, once I've painted my own house. LOL! Anyway, the best part is the roosting area. the girls are above chicken wire, which falls down onto a tray-like area. This is covered in shavings, and there is a little door on the back, so I can just scoop the chicken poop from overnights out into my wheel barrow!

Here are the girls in the new coop. We have nesting boxes underneath the roosting area. The plan is to divide the coop in half, so I can have a silkie flock and an egg laying flock separated, if need be. The silkies have their own roosting area. I am going to make a ramp up to it when the little chicks are big enough to go out there.

And here is chicken logic at its best. There are five nest boxes in the new place. They're not even laying eggs, just hanging out. Pretty funny. Vive le revolution poule!

Le Coop D'Etat - how droll ! Love it, love it.
So funny :o) Oh, how I wish I could keep a few
chickens here, but the town won't let us unless we
have an acre and I only have one half of one.

I'm gonna watch this thread and see how your ladies
fare from now on. Thanks a bunch for posting this.

Eufaula, I always enjoy your posts. I'm from the south and love Southerners' sayings. Yeah, BYH's chickens are living "high on the hog", or as my Aunt Glenna says,"They're knee deep in cotton". ;)

Yup, summertime and the livin' is easy here in NH. Well, no promises about that summer weather, but so far so good.

The poor chickens are all mixed up tday. They can't figure out why the old coop is locked up tight. ( helloooo girls!!) so I assume I will find eggs everywhere for the next couple of days until they figure out where to lay. I have a little nest box in the garage just for such emergencies. :)

You did a fabulous job! I think you thought of everything! I'm laughing about them crowded into one nook. I'm enjoying the French chicken humor as well! I can't believe you are going to leave it naked though and selfishly do your house first. bwa ha ha ha ha

BYH, does your new coop back up to the old coop's pen or are you going to install a new pen for your new coop? Again, it looks great!

I love your coop, it's beautiful. I want a big coop like yours. I'll show DH your picture tonight. We need a new coop for the bigger chickens. I have 8 Ameraucana that need a new home.

My last adventure in incubating eggs went horrible!! I blame my DH for my eggs not hatching. He got a brand new incubater from a friend who never used it due to dogs killing all his chickens. Well we put in 45 eggs, and only 2 hatched. I kept telling him the egg turner was not turning and he said yes it was, I kept seeing them in the same position all the time. He assured me it was working. Well when he went away for his work, I started watching every hour and sure enough the were not moving, it was to late by then. Although I started turning them myself it didn't help. We did have 2 hatch out of 45, not sure how that happened. But I told him I was going to order more and try again, I might let my goofy silkies incubate them, they are going broody on me again. I'm going to a chicken auction and I'm hoping to find some eggs on Friday that I really want, if not I'll be back buying on ebay.

The coop is backed up to the old pen. I've rearranged it slightly, but more or less it backs right up into it. I am cutting a small chicken door for the girls to use.

Cathy, I have broodies at all times. If it isn't one, it's another. Seriously. Especially those crazy silkies. I love them, though. And in the winter, they keep the eggs from freezing!

Thanks for the kudos on the coop. I'm really super proud of it.
