Hi: My name is Joyce, and I am new too this forum. I live in Mississauga, Ontario.
My Primula (Primrose) are not doing well this year. Does anyone have the same problem? Can anyone give me advise on what to do with these flowers? They have been in the ground for two winters and did well last year. Thanks for your help. Joyce

Hi Joyce, and welcome to Dave's Garden! I don't grow primroses, so I'm not a lot of help to you on this one - just wanted to welcome you to our community.

Hi Joyce! I have some Primula denticulata and P. auricula that have survived two winters, and an unidentified, seed-grown plant that has survived three winters. Primula florindae survived one winter, but I haven't seen it yet this year! They are all growing in shade, either from trees, buildings, or rocks. Hot, dry spells in early spring can shrivel them up, but they usually recover when the weather cools down again and they get moisture. Later hot spells may send them into summer dormancy. I grow Alchemilla, Dicentra, and Heuchera alongside Primula denticulata to hide it when it turns "ratty" after flowering.

Thanks for your help. My primrose are doing a little better now. They looked droopy , although they were starting to
bloom under the snow. The group is Cultivars. They will winter over in zone 5 or 6. I bought two new plants this year,
and I hope that they all winter over okay this year.

Joyce, I'm glad to hear your primrose cultivars have perked-up. I did some weeding yesterday and discovered my Primula florindae plants did come up after all. They just didn't flower yet this year. I don't know what they are waiting for!
