Feeding hummers by hand?

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

Our hummers are swarming! We've never had so many. Somewhere on DG I've seen photos posted of a member with hummers sitting on her hand. Does anyone know who that was or what she was feeding them? Ours come so close to me now that I believe I can get them to land on my hand also.

Debra - Congrats on all the hummers! That's awesome! I'm envious!

I am sure you can get them to eat out of your hand! Go for it!!! :-)

Thanks for the links, Becky. That's exactly what I was looking for. If I'm successful I'll post my photos of them feeding from my hand. Gotta tell you.....I did get a good laugh from your feeder pole 'decorated' to attract the hummers. You can't say you aren't trying! Hope you have seen some since.

I only have 3 so far.. I think when they are really hungry, especially in the fall, they will eat from any feeder you hold. I did this a couple of years ago.

Ours seem to be particularly active in the evening when they are 'tanking up' before nightfall. This is the first year we have had to refill feeders daily. There are about 7 hummers (that's a 'swarm' to me! LOL!) and 5 feeders. How can such a little bird eat so much? We are really enjoying them.

wow! they are eating alot.... that reminds me of my in-laws, they got alot of hummers in the evening. My FIL was saying he had to refill his feeder every day. Then one morning, my MIL woke up early and looked out on the patio and there was a raccoon sitting on the railing holding the hummingbird feeder and GUZZLING the nectar like a bottle of soda! Needless to say, he drank the entire thing, now they take it in at night when they go to bed. lol .... and 7 hummers is a swarm to me, too!

LOL! I would suspect raccoons also except the hummers empty the feeders during the day and we have a dog patroling the area at night. I have had a mouse eating my butterfly brew, though. I poured some in a natural indention in one of the rocks that border a flower bed. Two nights in a row the brew was obviously eaten from the middle leaving only a ring. This morning I found mouse droppings all around it.....mystery solved!

DH and I just returned from a nice outing - we toured a wildflower garden at the Heifer Intl Headquarters, went to a local state park and got some info on growing wildflowers in our front property, strolled through the arboretum, bought a book about growing wildflowers and bought (another!) hummer feeder.

I opened a new bag of sugar this afternoon. It will be interesting to see how long it lasts....

oh lovely day fleur ! My DH worked, but I took the kids to the fair at Oaks Park (this park is a small amusement park/roller rink that has NOT been updated in the least, truly a step back in time) right by the Willamette River. We met a friend and all the kids had fun feeding the goats, cows, sheep, etc., even a tortoise that looked big enough to ride on.

Let us know how quickly you go through that sugar... I'd love to have that problem!!

How wonderful to have such wholesome entertainment available for your kids to enjoy! That sounds like a great park.
