I am planning on using pine shaving in the chicken house, what do you use? I have heard not to use cedar to use cedar. And what do you do with the it? Compost? Pile it away in the woods? I would like to reuse as much as possible in my flower beds and gardens. What do you do?

Do you compost? (newbie with chicken poop coming)
Well, it is a little harsh when fresh for plants. We are working on developing some soil near us, so we layer it on over there. I'd say throw it in a compost pile. We use pine shavings and like them fine.
Thanks! I will compost it! How did you do on roofing? If you need any of the top of the roof eave shingles let me know we have extras!
I use pine shavings too and they go in the compost pile. If you want compost faster, try to do a layer of vegetable and fruit scraps on top of each layer of shavings.
My neighbors recently acquired several ducks. I'm sure they'd love it if I took some poop off their hands. Can you just throw it all (wood shavings and all) in the compost pile, layering as you go? How long will it take before it's usable in the garden without burning plants?
How thick of a layer? I have plenty of veggie and fruit eaters in the house to supplement that (12 macaws, 4 cockatoos and a couple of extras :O). I heard a can of beer to start it off helps too. So if I make u-shaped wire inclosure it thing, will that do it? Or what are your idea I am totally open
