Assassin Bug (Zelus longipes)
Recently my wife discovered that one of our container tomato plants was covered with what appeared to be the assassin bug and which we originally mistook for spiders because they were tending a large group of young assassains. Do they feed on tomato plants or just live on them to catch prey insects?
They can live on just about any plant in my yard, and they do feed on other insects. I recently found out that the leaf-footed bug nymphs look very similar to assassin bug nymphs. The difference is that the rear legs on the assassin bug nymphs are as thin as the front and middle legs. On the leaf-footed bug nymphs, the rear legs have a "flare" in them that gets larger as they grow up. The leaf footed bug nymphs also have noticeable "dots" on their abdomens. Here is a link to a bug guide photo of the leaf-footed bug nymphs.
