Digital Cameras

Baton Rouge, LA

I am looking for a digital camera that takes good close up pictures; such as, plumeria blooms. I would apreciate any advice and would be interested in knowing what others are using. Also, I would be interested in knowing the cost.

Jose,
Another good place to post that question would be the photography forum http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/camera/all/
Personally, I'm in love with my Canon S3 IS..it takes amazing macro shots!! If you're wanting something mid priced i.e. not as expensive as a digital SLR...one that allows creativity or point shoot availibility...this is the camera for you. Here is a shot of a cactus bloom a I took a few weeks ago

Part of getting the great shots is the softtware. You can crop anything to get in tight if you get a good photo. I took a close up without a macro lens and just croped the photo tight. I was using a 10 meg camera, croped and still reduced it to a small file for the internet. I also didn't use a tripod.
I loved my little Mavaca. I'd like to use it for flowers but my husband would kill me. My friend has a super little point and shoot. She uses it for flowers her husband uses it for work to shoot bugs. I'll ask her what it is. I wish I had her camera just for flowers.

I use an Olympus D-540 Zoom, About $!90, but, comes with a card that holds 30 pics. Best to buy a good card, I bought one that holds 3,500 for $35.

Shooting a good close up is a challenge, has to be overcast for best results>

Chantell, I have a Canon S1 1S which is likely the older model. it has 3.2 mega pixels. I LOVE my Canon too! I got through lots of batteries during the growing season. LOL
Nice pics!

Brad - I've seen YOUR pics!! Thank you for the kind words!! I will say that with the newer rechargeables i.e. Duacell's 2650 mAh - have been a God send!! I have 3 sets of four to go in the camera...always keeping the other 2 sets charged and ready. I've been VERY pleased with how long they last. I'm also not a fan of the LCD screens...old school, I know, but I still prefer the viewfinder...amazing how much that in itself prolongs the battery life.

My friend who isn't a techie has a Nikon cool pix 7600 little camera she I carry it in her purse all the time and a SONY 5.1 CYBER-SHOT . She loves the cameras. Sorry I have no idea what they cost. Easy to use and they are small. The one she carries all the time with her has a large viewing area.

the majority of my living is made in photography. I am convinced a minolta dimage a1 or a2 used on ebay is the best bang for the buck.about 300 to 375 dollars on ebay usually. easy enough for the beginner and I have used it professionally many times. It has a few limitations you dont get from the high end cameras Nicon d's and cannon d's. But it wont send you in to the poor house either.

Chatell,

Osteospermum hybrid, quill or spoon (can't remember which). In California they call them freeway daisy, they are widely grown there, as a ground cover, in urban areas mostly. There are now a hundred different hybrids, easy to root from cuttings tender to heavy frost. Here, one of my collection>

Yes, it's an Osteospermum hybrid - spooned variety. They are also called Whirlygigs. They come in different colours. I saved seeds from one plant last year and have stuck success. Mind you, I have no idea which colour it was. I also wonder if it will revert to it's normal Osteospermum self, or if the leaves will be spooned.

I should see some flowers soon.
