Good evening folks;,,,
I don't want to think about the many failed attempts I've had trying to photograph one of these little birds... The best advice I can give is to locate an area where these birds hang out, pick your spot and wait for them to come to you....This one was in a wooded area with a small clearing which it would fly into to feed on what ever it was feeding on.... Maybe it was the skeeter bugs I kep't smacking for three hours that it took waiting...
Without looking in your bird books, who knows what it is...
Hope everyone has a nice holiday weekend;,,
Who Are You!!!
Had to look him up - we don't get them here - but I won't give it away. :-)
What a beautiful little bird and a great picture.
Nice picture of a male Redstart. I would suggest locating a nest and sit near it to get photos. When I lived in your part of the world, I usually located several nest each year. They like to nest in small trees and bushes. young clumps of Witch Hazel or Alder are good places to look. I have also found nests in forks of young maple trees. Look from eye level to about twelve feet high.

Beautiful pic Dave!!!
oh I have never seen one of those before! Wonderful photos Unclegt!! It looks like he is taking his bows after a vocal performance lol.
Great pictures. We had a dozen or more of them one year, just for a few hours. They would flit from tree to tree and were fun to watch. I had to call our local birdwatcher to find out what they were and she told me that it is rare to ever see them here and that she had never had that opportunity. I wish I had been able to take pictures that day.
American Redstart Setophaga ruticilla (not Redstart Phoenicurus phoenicurus)

What a nice picture, Dave...
What a beautiful bird UncleG. I'm not too far from Ohia, maybe I'll see one.
What a beautiful pose!
I had to chuckle at your skeeter supposition. I get nervous each time I get bitten by one. (West Nile Virus). Hooray for all the birds that dine on them.
Great shot of a beautiful little bird!
I hate mosquitoes because they love me! All of the rain has made it almost unbearable to go outside these days. Not complaining about the rain, just the bugs LOL
Yeah! I was right!! I saw a couple in Maine a few months ago. You're right. They are all over the place flitting from tree to tree. Singing all the while.
A few years ago my DH and I, went to the Keys...it was May, and the birds were migrating...every where you looked were Warblers of all different kinds..I have been a bird watcher since I was about 10 years old...so the birds were ones I knew from pictures, but had never actually seen. There were a lot of American Redstarts too....There were people from England there for the birds, it is a well known thing...the people from England had cameras with amazingly huge lenses....
Man, you lucky dog!!! On my 'want to see list'!
It was amazing..I saw birds I knew but had never seen..there were lots of the Red Starts, on the beach...we went to an island that is 60+ miles from Key West, the Tortugas, and there were many birds out there....
What a beautiful picture!! great pose for you!!.....I hope that you can observe the parents going to the nest area and ultimately locate it....how exciting , and what a keen eye. It apperars to be a small bird...Perhaps warbler size?? Lovely, absolutely lovely. Now is that a male or female or is the coloring the same in Redstarts?
--Birdie ;-))
The American Redstart is in the warbler family
